Music Background
Hawk Tahjuddin (b. Robert Brake), is a gifted Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist who took an interest in music at an extremely young age.
"The first music I remember hearing was something on Earl Garner's 'Moods' LP when I was 4, and Marvin Gaye's 'Hitchike'"when I was 6. This spark of musical interest was fueled by the Beatles breaking onto the scene, as well as the Golden Years of Motown.
Then in 1969, Hawk tuned into the Watts Summer Festival on T.V. to see what he thought was a "really light skinned brother" with a big 'fro jamming on an harmonica. The group was War, and the harp player was Lee Oskar.
Within 10 minutes of the broadcast, Hawk had purchased a Hohner Blues Harp and was copying Lee Oskar from his head.
"Hell, a harp only costed $5.00 then, so I ran down to Flash Records on Adams Bl., and bought one!"
The harp being a "fixed reed" instrument forced Hawk to learn about Theory & Harmony. "I couldn't understand why my notes didn't match Stevie's." "I was singing in a neighborhod group, and I lived across the street from 1st A.M.E. Church. Between those two sources, I learned basic harmony & theory".
Los Angeles High School followed and Hawk (while never joining the school band), met & played with virtually ALL the musicians at school and the general area, indulging in both singing and harmonica.
Hawk became extremely well-known in South Central L.A. as "The Harmonica Man", winning many local contests and showcases. Because of his high musical acumen, close musicians dubbed him "Musclehead".
Hawk is also an composer-arranger. "I was always bugging Mr. Jackson & Mr. Sears (the school music teachers) regarding advanced theory, harmony & arranging concepts. Meanwhile, I was learning melodica, trombone, timbales, guitar, and piano."
In addition to having led his own jazz/funk/fusion band, BRAKE (with Eric "E" Endo & Doug Sanborn), Hawk has played with Hershel Kennedy (Graham Central Station), Daoud Balewa, Eddie Kendricks, Chaka Khan, Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report), Bunny Brunel, Kipper Jones,The Gap Band,"Tet" Nakamura (War), and Azar Lawrence.
Hawk is currently playing bass for Al.'s Peace
