Bio:
I am an Assistant Professor (Tenure) of Fine Arts at St. Philip's College. I am also Chair of the Fine Arts Department. While living and working in San Antonio, I have exhibited my work in numerous locations such as the Blue Star Arts Complex,, The University of Texas at San Antonio Satellite Space, The University of Texas at San Antonio Gallery, The Southwest School of Art and Craft and The Carver Cultural Center and The McNay Museum of Art. I have also exhibited at the Fine Arts Gallery in Lubbock,Texas and the African American Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. He also participated in a group show at the Agora Gallery in Soho, New York and the Lab Gallery in New York. I was also included in the New American Talent exhibit at the Texas Fine Arts Association in Austin, Texas, From Africa to America at the Longview Museum of Art, and I my work was included in the Latitude exhibition in Te Whare Wanaga O Awanuiarangi (The Tribal University of Awanuiarangi) New Zealand. Most recently, I had a solo exhibition at the Lawndale Center in Houston, Texas.
"Shephard's drawings and paintings combine portraiture and parody. The distinguishing characteristics of Shephard's subjects include large teeth, gaping mouths and angry, suspicious eyes. Whereas DeKoonig painted women with a violent flourish, Shephard's style lampoons pop culture's representation of African Americans, as well as Uncle Sam and Bin Laden. The intensity of his drawings results from his conflation of ideology and the figure. Wildly thwarted faces and googly eyes appear corrupted with racism; torment and confusion abound. Recently, Shephard has shifted his focus into the sci-fi and cartoon realm. A parallel realm serves his work well. In it, he is able to metaphorically treat the powerful, toxic content of his work, and he does so with facile inventiveness. The montage-like scenes barrage the viewer with images of mocking faces and abstract designs."
My music is the soundtrack to my visions.
