I grew up in the 70's in the jazz music scene in Northern California. My brother and I built a pirate radio station in our house to spin commercial free jazz music to all our musician friends in the east bay as we jammed on drums and bass (my brother was bassist/keyboard player Mark Phillips). Mark went on to write and produce and play all over NoCal and the world, and I relocated in Southern California.
After playing for years in several local bands doing covers to punk to fusion, I pretty much just started playing the occasional session and jammed with friends at their club gigs. Around that time I started engineering at a friends studio and found out that I loved it! Years later at my own studio, I got a little burned out on the pop/rock gigs I had been recording/producing and I wanted to get back to some of those jazz/fusion/world roots...
The tracks on this project were written and recorded in my studio in between other gigs. They all started as a dare, spurred on by a guitarist friend. He said the difference between 'pop' and 'jazz' is that a jazz recording uses a real band of musicians, and in pop music you can get any guy to drop your parts in, or the producer could do it himself…
So I set out to produce a jazz recording without a band.
Please let me know what you guys think of the songs. Drop them on your iPod if you like and let others check them out. I’m putting this stuff out there free just for the fun of it. I sincerely hope you enjoy these tracks! Thanks!
