Need help to make song swing!
Wednesday, March 23 2005 @ 03:23 PM CST

I am new to apple and garageband.

My daughter (9 years old) has written a song about spring with some music, she plays the cello... I have managed to get the melody into garageband but need to make the song more lively.

Who can help?

It just needs some extras... She wants to perform this song at school.. Anyone who can help please send me an email (or reply to this post..)

She would be ever so happy to have the song swing! I have the melody as a garageband file...

Some extra info: The melody is the cello notes. She wants to have this melody on cd so she can sing the song on stage. The problem is that the cello notes alone sound a little... well thats where we need help. (and I have no musical background so I am not much help here) We have the Garageband file on my website: Philine Song Lente ("Lente" is the Dutch word for Spring!)

Could you give us a little more info?

• When you say you've recorded the melody, do you mean you've recorded you daughter playing the cello, or someone singing the melody, or something else?

• You say she want to perform this at school. Do you mean that you want to create a track that she can then play her cello over, or is the performance just a playback of her cello plus your additions?

• If you are wanting to add rhythm (drums/percussion/beat) loops, was the melody input tempo (speed) consistent, and do you know what the tempo is? If not, can you put down some temporary drum loops at the desired tempo and then re-input the melody?

• Are you wanting to add anything more than rhythm loops? Do you want things like strings, piano, and the like? If so, do you have a keyboard to input these things? If you do not, do you know how to use the pencil tool to input the desired notes and chords?

• Would you be willing to make this into an Open Collaboration, or to collaborate with someone here on MacJams? If so, there are many talented musicians who might be willing to work with you in such a way as trading the GB file back and forth. I know there are quite a few here who collaborate with others and are knowledgable and skilled in a way you might need.

• How soon does this need to be done?

I know I didn't really answer your questions, but by asking my own, hopefully we will streamline your desires for the rest of the MacJams community and produce the results you desire.

And the answers to your bullets:

- we have cello notes on paper and lyrics on paper to start with.

- she wants to sing at school with a music cd to accompany her. The cd should at least have the cello sound playing the notes.

- We have the notes in the correct tempo, see file on website: www.esweb.nl

- I am not musical at all, and can only help my daughter input the notes into the apple. Need help from there on....

- I am impressed by the depth of your questions, thanks already! I think the MIDI file just needs a little help... Not too fancy but just a little extra. After all the focus should me on my daughter singing!!!

For now the current file: Midi File on website

That's a bunch of silly java scripts. They refuse to download on Safari. I managed to download them with Camino, but next time, just post links?

I'll take a look at the file. Cellos are kinda my specialty.... Big Grin

I should have the final version of the midi file on the website in about 2 hours.. The current files are not complete...

But thanks for all the help so far!

You da man Vic for steppin' up to the plate. This appears to be a genuine and polite request for assistance. If you get something going, how about posting it here as an open collaboration? Maybe get a MacJams community project going?

The notes are complete!! I adjusted to speed from 120 to 140 to better correspond with the lyrics of the song.

But now the hard part... To make it swing...

Please go to my website to download the garageband file.. (click here)

Thanks.. Evert

PS. My daughter is happy with all the help, see photo on website.

Thanks Skipper. I thought it was the least I could do after receiving help myself, and not really being able to currently contribute anything more. I knew that if I gave it a little push, the talent available here would step up and get the job done.
