Re:Most underrated guitarist

That "somebody" was me, and what I said was: "for what it's worth, I am pretty sure that any of the guitarists we have in our music programme at the university where I teach would have no trouble playing "Anji."" Let me explain further; admission to our music programme is by competitive audition, and guitar is one of the most competitive areas within our programme. For every 7-9 applicants, only one is accepted. So they're pretty darn good (sometimes REALLY good) when they get here, and our programme challenges them to improve dramatically in each of the four years they spend with us. So when I say that our students would have no trouble playing "Anji," I'm not just blowing smoke, nor should you suggest they can't 'feel' the soul or passion of the music, since you have never heard them. If they were unable to play expressively, they would not last long in the programme. |

Isn't it "Angie" and wasn't it written by Bert Jansch? It is a nice little tune. I used to play it all the time, but I don't play it as well as I used to.
I think the most under-rated guitarist is the the one that plays in tune.

'Angie' or 'Anji' as it is sometimes known...was written by Davey Graham...another great guitarist, and subsequently recorded and popularised by both Jansch and Simon.

We always think of him as a great singer/songwriter, but I think James Taylor is completely overlooked as a guitar player.

Lots of greats named and I would agree with all of them. But I would have to say Bryan Jones would be my #1 pick. Anything the Stones did live He stood alone. Unlike many guitar players of that era he was a true guitarist. His leads were never dull or repeating, going out in his own melodic world and still not loosing the theme or foundation of the song.

My favourite guitarist is Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers). He is so underrated I can't understand it! When he plays it looks like its as easy and natural as walking.
If anyone is not sure about the guys abilities, I urge you to go find some hearbreakers stuff. Another guy I admire is Mark Knofler (Dire Straits). Please check out my latest: GREED |

Yea, Knofler is another very underrated guitarist. Dire Straits kind of came out of nowhere and now, I guess went back. would like to hear more.

I don't think Dire Straits exist anymore do they? Mark Knofler has done a few solo projects and is very country these days. You can't beat Sultans of Swing, or brothers in Arms. Please check out my latest: GREED |
