Re:Logic and Mac Mini?

From what I have read about the hardware of the Mini, it is based on a "laptop" motherboard and related hardware (low power consumption, physically small components, etc.) It is a (Cooper) Mini versus an SUV. So it will generally do pretty well, as long as you don't load it up too much. Of course to keep it speedy for real-time recording, you should put the faster (7200 RPM) hard disk in it, and more memory, which will give you lots of breathing room, and it is REALLY portable if you want to take it on the road... but for a home-studio computer that you want to be able to expand and upgrade for 6 years, I tend to spend the extra money and get the tower. And yes, the iMacs are a GREAT best-of-both-worlds computer... although they are still not that easily upgradeable.

Wo ,,,, I guess I won't be upgrading to Logic express until I upgrade my Mac. Apple says LE min. requirements are a G4 1.25 ghz. I have 2 gigs (max) RAM in my mirror door Mac & was seriously considering the Logic upgrade. So is there anyone that uses Logic on a G4??

Logic should work just fine on a MacMini. I use Digital Performer 6 and it works GREAT so why wouldn't Logic? Once again I'll say: I can't say enough good things about my Macmini. This machine is totally AWESOME!
I know Apple iMac is a better machine and the Mac Pro is awesome however my experience with the mini is - well - It blows my G4 way far away. I really don't have to get into details but this little box is all you need if you want a Mac. I can't see any reason why you couldn't run almost anything on it so Logic should should run without a hitch and have power to spare. I have a Mini 2.0 GHz with 1g ram and I'm having no problems what so ever. Now you can buy a mini with 4g ram. (WOW) I myself don't even think that much ram is even that important only because I do what I need to with only 1G ram.

Make your choice - I'm very happy I chose a Macmini 2.0GHz 1G ram and it works GREAT!

I do use several external hard drives for media and storage. I recommend having an external drive with the Macmini for any audio and/or vidoe work.

Best of luck,

mvh : )

You can still get the older edition iMac from Argos current price £779.00. You can plug a screen in if you want and expand the memory to 4GB. I've not heard of many problems with them but you never know I suppose. Got to better than a Mini for your style of multi layering.

For a while I was running L6, maybe even L7, on a 733Mhz G4, but I basically had to freeze all my tracks except the one I was working on.

I'd say Apple's minimum requirements (G4 @ 1.25G) are probably not enough for really working comfortably. I can top out my dual G5, so I should really find the pennies for an Intel Mac.
