Re:Logic Express arrived here for free on Saturday!

I recommend the Logic Pro training books by Apple for starters and, of course, Youtube! One tip, if you want all the jam packs. Logic Pro will set you back $200 and includes all of these. What I did instead was buy Mainstage for $30 which ALSO lets you download all of the jampacks and lets you use them with Logic Express.

I will probably never perform live (which is Mainstage's use), but the price is very reasonable when you factor in the software instruments, etc. The only points missing from Logic Pro, are some of the cool reverb tools and the sculpture synth - which I can live without for now.

Have fun!
Mike

I'm on a PowerMac so no app store purchases are possible. Odd that Apple will support a fifteen year old PC (with Quicktime) but won't support a six year old Mac, my Quad G5. Anyway, thanks for the book recommendation, I found it cheap on eBay.

Someone's going to be annoyed when he/she wakes up; the book was going at £3.40 with four bids. I put in a bid with nine seconds to go and got it for £5.51 and of course there was no time for anyone to respond. Smile £5.51 is $8.92 (US) at today's rate, less than half the next cheapest going on eBay in the UK.

I milk hardware for all it's worth too -- I salute you!!

when I replace my 2006 intel imac I'll probably go mac mini with 7400 drive loaded for bear with memory. cheapest way to go and a substantial upgrade. and I'll have gotten my $1200 worth out of the old baby.

have fun most of all, it's what's really important. and make music. I have friends with state of the art hardware who never do anything with it. Wink we know better and pile the mileage on ; )

The Quad G5 is superb; nothing I do taxes it except rendering 3D CG images and animations. Also since it's a little old I buy used software that runs well on it and I get it cheap. None cheaper than my copy of Logic Express, free is pretty much unbeatable.

If I win the lottery I'll buy one of those 12-core Mac Pros and plenty more besides, but for now the G5 is more than adequate.

Now I have started writing music I doubt that I will ever be able to stop for very long, so no worries about that.

If you can't access the app store, you won't be able to buy Mainstage, which is a shame as you can also dowload ALL the jampacks! Huge download, but a real bargain @ £21.

When I first got Logic (Express, like yourself) and opened it, It took me ages to even get a sound out of it! I learnt really by opening up GB projects in it. I moved on to Logic Pro some four years ago and rarely use anything else now. You may not notice any difference in the sound quality these days, (you really could once) because GB has moved to 24 bit, like Logic, but there's so much more you can do! If you're like me, you'll love fiddling about with it all. Good luck!

It's about time I changed this...

Dave's idea of opening a GB project is excellent. I wish I'd thought about that.

It does depend on what version of Logic you've got. I gave up on LE7 as I couldn't make it work and went back to GB.

LE8 was easier but I was still struggling until I sat in with a mate who is a professional engineer during one of his mixing sessions. Just watching him taught me a lot and now I never open GB as I've found it's just as easy to work in Logic as in GB.

I'd recommend having a look at these guys for some cheap and very useful training videos

Good luck.

I admit I've not spent much time even trying to get to grips with Logic. I have opened GarageBand projects in Logic and re-saved them and tried tinkering with mixing and reverb. The plug in I use for reverb works in both GarageBand and Logic though, so there's not that much incentive to use Logic yet. I am studying music theory and trying to learn new software at the same time as learning more about how music works is a bit much. I plan to take some time out of my music studies when I reach the end of the current book, and then I will spend a bit of time learning to use Logic. I am assured that Logic can do much better scoring, so that alone might be worth looking at.

I'm sure when I am ready to start work in earnest on a symphony, sometime in the next couple of years, I will want to spend some serious time getting acquainted with Logic.

I still loathe the logic piano roll input... nowhere near as nice as cubase - quantizing is a pain as well, especially advanced quantizing like ends, lengths, snapping velocities, compressing velocities etc.
