voting sabotage
Sunday, September 23 2007 @ 10:59 AM CDT

I don't know if anybody else has experienced this : I have just found it to be mildly upsetting. Typically MJers are supportive of my work and vote accordingly - It's all subjective- I have found that there is always 1 or 2 people that vote 4s 5s or 6s on my work which drastically impacts the score- which otherwise would all be in the 8 - 10 range. Have any pf you experienced this? Do you feel the MJ should drop the lowest score -as this wojuld be a more accurate representation of what the true consensus is? i hope this will make for interesting discussion. i also requested on my profile that everyone pls write a comment if you decide to vote - naturally, there is never a comment from the party pooper. :0 anyway, back to my happy face. Smile

yes, fortunately or unfortunately (depends on how you look at it), this recurring topic hasn't come back up for several months... but it has been discussed often in the forums over the years. And, the admins *have* actually done a LOT to counteract vote-bombing (there was even a song written "The one-bomber-blues" I think). Anyway, there's some careful countermeasures in place to make it harder to have malicious users deflate (or inflate) voting scores. It isn't foolproof, but its a LOT better than it was a couple years ago. So now we have problems with 5-bombers. On the other hand, on a score of 1-10, 5 is "average", not good or bad, just "eh". I know we don't want to be considered "eh" by somebody, but it happens. What if that is their honest opinion? Personally, I almost never vote here, because I am much more interested in verbal comments/critiques than a single anonymous number... and I give as I wish to receive, so I give comments. Luckily Macjams offers people a number of ways to react to the music, not just by voting. And there are numbers of ways your music is automatically promoted on the site, not just by the voting rank. So, cheer up, and feel free to comment on my latest piece (smirk!)

Voting sucks, its awkward to vote and awkward to be voted on...People have different taste. What I may like might not be good to someone else, so its not fair for the artist mainly.
I purpose a total revamping of the voting system perhaps make it more narrow.

5 star ratings I have always found to be the best whether its movie or album reviews
and make it so the reviewed starts with a minimum of 2 1/2 stars. A good song would most likely be 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 stars, 5 stars would be hard to receive.

I think this would be more fair, I would still stay away from that game.

You REALLY consider yourself Exceptional/Grand Artistry and Groundbreaking/Mindblowing? Wow... wtf are you doing messing around with us "normals" on MacJams?

btw there is already another current thread going on where the musical grand masters are discussing what is and isn't' acceptable tributes to their glory.

yes it is a game- say, on one of my pieces, which has 12 votes all 9.5 - 10, and one scores it a 4.75 - it's obviously deliberate sabotage- i was talking to doc bizarre about this, and he said when people vote his stuff down, it's usually just because they're jealous. there is some truth to that. yah - interesting responses everyone!

Sorry to hear you're getting hit like this, dj. It HAS been discussed and addressed in the past. I know of some very fine musicians/players who just make it a point to disable the rating system when they post, specifically for this reason.

Fan picks is an effective way of checking out new music because of this, sometimes.
Whoever's bombing you should leave some kind of comment with a reason. I think someone mentioned adding a feature where, if you put anything under a 7, for instance, you automatically have to write a response.

I HAVE noticed, though, that when I read comments from before I got here (say, about 2 years ago) that the ratings were generally lower and, it would seem, less generous. Just my observation, though. I might be wrong.

Personally, I really love your stuff.

rob: i assume ur being facetious - i am not trying to imply that i am brilliant at all, just trying to bring up subject matter that obviously strikes a chord with people - yes i agree with what you say - but i sure as heck would not post my "average" stuff on here - disabling the rating system would be the most viable alternative. Yes, dj... much has been written on this topic. It probably happens to everyone at one time or another... for a variety of peculiar reasons, ranging from innocently subjective to outrageously machiavellian and petty.

There are some phenomenal talents here who have gotten *The Treatment* --- despite their excellent musical and production work. It's a shame really, but don't let it get you down.

"Making the grade" in the music biz has very little to do with the ratings you get here... it's the comments and advice offered that are often valuable in helping people reach that goal. Wink
