Getting Started - Drum Loops
Friday, June 17 2011 @ 09:40 AM CDT

To all at Mac Jams:

I am a newbie!! I have a Mac Book Pro, I've messed around with gb a bit, but not much. I do not have a kb and did not want to run out and purchase equipment or software that I don't need.

My questions - I have an interest in learning more about music and in particular "programming" a Mac to play drum loops in the background for a local band. That is really where my interest lies - messing around with software and seeing what I can do from a programming standpoint (I want to learn some things about music too). I am looking for any information as to how and where to get started learning how to create AND change drum loops. I need to be able to play these loops in a live performance for this band. I have no idea how my drum loops get to live sound either!!! What equipment is needed here? The band has told me that my first assignment is to learn how to do drum loops in the background with a good deal of control over them and be able to add a measure / start and stop the loops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Software / equipment suggestions? I thought about buying a keyboard / MIDI controller and possibly Abelton Live? Thanks for any and all help from anyone.

Welcome to MacJams and best of luck in your project. You'll eventually get the info you are looking for - but I'm not a techie. However - I do play in a band and think understanding the set up would help you get the right answer.
What else is your responsibility on stage. Is it your sole position to trigger drums? If that's the case there are samplers that work with pads that would allow you to do this. You also have the choice of building loops from scratch using various drum software - or working from a large library of pre recorded tracks.

It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done.

Bud - I have no clue how to play the drums - I assumed that I could "program" drum loops and play them in the background for the band. I also am assuming from what I read that I would eventually need some form of device with MIDI controllers to help control that sound coming out of my Mac. My responsibility on stage would be only that - taking care of the drum loops in the background and managing the equipment and programming needed for the same. Thanks again for any and all help!

once you do get those dialed in they will sound great through a good sound system. no one will realize you have no idea what you're doing :-)

I use drums on demand cause I like real sounding drums but there are a TON of fake sounding electronic drums available ;-) and you don't have to have rhythm just be able to fire off the sequences.

the band is fortunate to have someone willing to do drums like you -- they will sound awesome with a real person firing off the drum loops :-)

just start messing with the drums in GB play around you won't break anything experiment invent your own style!! make some noise and don't worry if it's "right" or like anyone else :-) shift a paradigm. enjoy creating. and HAVE FUN!!

Bud / DW -

I too saw the You Tube Abelton Live video. I'm trying to figure out if I should jump right into Abelton Live and an MIDI keyboard / padKONTROL or if there is a better solution. I want to get into ONE software package as learning two would be more time consuming and difficult. From what I read, GB does not have the control or ability to fine tune the loops, add measures and be able to be controlled for a live performance which is my ultimate goal. Any other thoughts here? I am posting on Abelton's sight as well - and I keep leaning that way from what I've read. Then comes the equipment choices and what I "need" right now to get started. Do either of you know how the drum sound integrates with the music from the rest of the band? Do I play with my own speakers or something?

I am no drummer but drums are like 40-50% of the sound especially live the beat is most mportant hey the band has to follow YOU

want to get good!? make a decision on your interface and daw and play and practice on it EVERY DAY for a year -- everyone will think and say and tell you you ROCK!!

that's how i learned keyboards played and practiced EVERY DAY for a YEAR. same with acoustic guitar :-)

this drum endeavor = same type of deal play and practice hone your own style and like I said HAVE FUN!!

Don't rush into anything quickly - keep this post up and you'll likely get some sound advice eventually from someone with more experience doing what you want to do.
