PCR-800 Midi Controller

The basic keyboard works very well with Garageband but I find that assiging functions to the controller arrray of knobs buttons and sliders to be frustrating. Ideally I would like to able to take any of the the Garageband effects and functions such as instruments, eq, amp, modeling etc and give them a place on the midi controller array. Is this possible to do with Garageband or do I have to use Logic? With over fifty controller locations it's annoying that there is very little I can actually do with any of these sliders and knobs.
