Stinger Party

Challenges are so February 3rd. We're having a party instead - Feb. 15.

I've been meaning to propose this idea for a few years - and it may already have been suggested. If so my apologies and applause to the previous effort.

I listen to NPR on a regular basis and love the way they use bits of existing music to segue from one story to the next. Sometimes these short pieces are written specifically for that purpose - and radio everywhere uses some form of stinger for whatever reason.

So - I propose a very simple concept. Rather than lifting 30 seconds from one of your existing songs - sit down and write a 30 second piece of music that feels complete - or at least conveys enough information to stand alone as a musical statement. It can feel like a lift from a longer piece - and that may be the easiest way to pull this off - but the idea is to hit that 30 second target as close as possible. This is radio after all - where the air is rare.

Participants may post an entry that contains more than one 30 second stinger (separated by a few seconds of silence) if they get inspired. But please only one entry per participant.

Entries are due February 15th.

Something very cool is happening. People are joining the party and posting after the launch. I love that.

Keep them coming - there is no end date to this party.
