Wednesday, November 09 2011 @ 09:01 AM CST

Has anyone used this? How is it? I'm considering getting it just for fun.

It's good fun on the pad and worth the money.
I'd like to get it on the phone. I assume it's the same interface.

Hi, I got it like the first day possible and I think it is great fun for the money, and not just fun. I could even compose on it! While walking through the woods from the underground to my work! I never could find out how to make anything "real" on SynthStation, which I bought a long time ago (for similar kind of money if I remember right, it's on sale now for $1.99 but it is not for iOS 5 then!) but Garageband feels faaiirly intuitive, even if a quick look in the rather comprehensive manual is recommended (hope you can find it ;-). Of course, at times you do get a bit annoyed about the small screen, but you build your song for example 8 bars at the time, then duplicate and edit or add a new set of freshly made bars.

If you have a little patience I will soon post the little song I made with it, with just a little bit of post-editing in "big" Garageband. (Export to iTunes, and pick the file up on the computer that way.)

Edit: Here it is: A Brisk Walk in the Autumn Forest Enjoy :-)

I am no expert but if you have a question I'll try to answer it here in the thread.

BTW, you get quite a few MB of new loops and stuff when you open an iPhone project on you Mac :-)

Good value for money, anyway, if you have half a GB free on the phone...

Have fun,
Henke

Check out my iPad book Den femte årstiden (The Fifth Season) with texts (in Swedish) from the 80's, photos from the last decade or so and six of my songs from MacJams.

Just composed my latest piece, "You Never Really Think You're Gonna Get Old", with this software for iPhone. I think it's pretty amazing - the sound quality, the flexibility, the sampler - top notch. Blows away every other multi-tracker that I've come across for iPhone. And for only 5 bucks? I paid twenty for ProStudio and it was so unstable I couldn't really ever use it.

i have it and wrote a song on it just today. looking forward to importing it into Logic and messing with it there.

the only things I don't like so far are:

you cant mess with the piano roll at all, but I guess I can fix mistakes and mess with velocities on my computer.

no effects really, but again I can do that on my computer.

the "smart" instruments bum me out.

on the positive: easy to use (instantly figured it out), sounds good, quantize works well to fix mistakes when drumming, exportable to Logic and Garageband, and most important is you can make music anywhere. great sketch pad and much more conducive to quick sessions than some of the other apps I have for recording (rebirth - what a bummer).

I struggle with the iPhone interface because I can't see -- my eyes aren't good enough without glasses. I wear reading glasses on the computer with a 26 inch screen. on iphone I need my bifocals. going back and forth from computer to iphone I have to switch glasses. makes for a frustrating user experience in my case.

on occasion sure iphone is great standalone. but will never replace my large monitor. maybe ipad might but I doubt it and i don't have one yet.

I like having a dedicated music computer the iphone is more of a networking device for me. I do little networking on the imac. conversely I do little music on iphone. but it's great people can :-)

If you search MJ for "ipad" and "garageband" you can hear some samples of what this app can do. The capabilities and sound engine are the same on both the iPhone and iPad, just a different interface.

Its great! And if you are morbidly curious about iOS music - a shameless plug:

My blog:http://whitherwalter.blogspot.com

I blog about music making in general but a large percentage is about iOS music making. Also check out blog by SmiteMatter if you get a chance.
