Recovering erased takes
Monday, November 28 2011 @ 02:22 PM CST

Is there any way of recovering erased takes in Garageband? My sax playing friend accidentally erased all of his takes from the first section of a song, accidentally highlighting them when he was erasing a current take, and now everything is lost. Is there a way of finding lost takes? Or recovering lost saves song files?

He was unaware of the erasure and saved the file, perhaps multiple times, before he noticed.

I haven't recorded live playing in Garageband in years. I use Logic, which files each take away in a sub-folder for takes. Much easier to keep track.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance!

I haven't used GB in a while either, but usually, you can find anything you've recorded or imported in the GB package file. If you right click the file icon, you get the option to "Show Package Contents" [the file is really a folder]. I'm not sure if they're deleted from this folder when you delete the file from the project, but it may be worth a look, if you haven't already. Good luck!

It's about time I changed this...

In Logic you have to confirm if a deletion involves deleting a file from disc, rather than from the project.

If GB does not have that precaution, then here's another reason to upgrade....

I just called Woody and he did what you said. There are 3 takes in the folders, that's it. Just the last 3 takes he was working on before he erased everything.

Also, the earlier takes are not in his computer's trash. They're vaporized.

So, I agree with VicDiesel. Worth the upgrade to Logic!

So it doesn't save them. Bummer, and yes, upgrade!

If he happens to be using Time Machine for backing up, then the chances are excellent he can recover the deleted takes.

If I can't fix it, it ain't broke Smiley

Right. He didn't notice he'd selected "all" somehow when erasing the first new take in a later section of the song, highlighting all sections (out of eyeshot).

I used to save versions of a song. 1a, 1b, lc... When I was certain version 1c worked, I'd erase 1a, but always keep most recent backup. I started doing this with Performer back in the day when crashes were frequent. I should have suggested that to him earlier.

....TimeMachine is such a useful tool ....

I have finally figured this out but now I have forgotten what to use it for.
