Don't get me started
Wednesday, March 05 2008 @ 04:33 PM CST

I was just at Guitar Center (they have a "Green Tag" sale going on; the item I wanted was not on sale, but I got it with 25% off anyway) and noticed a book "Famous guitar intros" or something like that. The openings of a bunch of famous songs.

Most of them were 4 bars or less! (Fewer?)

Keep that in mind next time you're tempted to use the whole of your chorus as an instrumental intro. Less is more, and the more less, the more more. So to speak.

Victor.

excellent point; although i was thinking of starting up the "long meandering path to nowhere" movement. our vision consists of an instrumental version of an entire song as an intro, followed by the chorus (instrumental of course) as sort of a coupe de grace, into which we go into the song proper, followed by a nice lengthy outro of your choice. it's hard to gauge what the reaction will be, but if anyones interested....

Do you remember what some of the great intros were? "Satisfaction" comes to mind pretty quickly. Anyone else got a favorite intro?

The intro to "Roundabout" by Yes. A little more than 4 bars, though

The Lion Sleeps Tonight - more than 4 - but priceless.

It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done.

On a related note:

There's a Satie orchestral piece which is made up entirely of ending crescendos. It's very, very funny. Lot of Romantic, drawn out stuff...great spoof...

I live between the notes
