CollabBlab Challenge!
Wednesday, January 20 2010 @ 07:12 PM CST CollabBlab! The MacJams Collaboration ChallengeWhat is it? CollabBlab! is a celebration of artist collaboration at MacJams. It is a look inside what happens when two or more songsmiths share talents and creativity to create something completely unique and surprising. By posting multiple "snapshots" of a work in progress artists reveal the trials and triumphs of the collaboration process so we can all learn and be inspired to become better collaborators. Neat! Where can I find CollabBlab! entries? When MacJams artists begin a CollabBlab! project a link to the project profile will be posted here: CollabBlab! Projects
How can I CollabBlab!? CollabBlab! is an open challenge - you can join in any time.
Suggested CollabBlab! Snapshots As you work through your collaboration, you may consider adding a post to your project profile at each of the following stages. Add notes about your progress in the song description section and post audio files of your work in progress. Song Concept How did you go about discussing the song concept? Did you share rough audio sketches or reference existing songs ("let's create a song like...")? Where are the lyrics coming from? How are you planning to divide the work? Audio: Hummed melodies, percussion or guitar riffs, chord progressions, etc. Arrangement Now that you've laid down some tracks, share some insights. How did you share files? Who is contributing what? Did you hit any stumbling blocks? Has the direction of the song changed? Audio: A rough cut of the song parts, a segment of the chorus, an idea for a middle-section break, etc. Nearing Completion The song has taken shape. How did you arrive at a shared vision? Did you make any major revisions? How are you handling the vocals? Audio: A rough mix of the song. The Finale! The song is complete! What choices did you make during the final mix? Did you struggle with any details or technical difficulties? Is there anything you wish you had done differently during the process? Audio: The completed song. That's it! Now go find a partner and join CollabBlab! challenge! |

Hey, this is cool. I have something like this that is being considered, although we have decided not to rush and it may take up to a year or more... could turn into an epic. I'll talk to her.

Great idea. I like the ongoing aspect.
Do you think you should create a CollabBlab profile page that "Fans" only those profile pages that are part of the Challenge? It might make it easier to find additional CollabBlab collabs, if each CollabBlab post has your Profile on it as a Fan. |

Also, how do you imagine collaborators share some of their conversation, the actual words tossed back and forth that help decide what direction to take, how to shape the arrangement and mix? In most of my collabs, this is an important aspect of the end result, the communications back and forth. Details of these conversations could be part of the Song Description on each stage episode/draft song, but a synopsis might be nice to somehow post on the umbrella Profile page.

I think some collaborators will be more explicit than others when it comes to detailing the process - it depends on the particular personalities involved. This is really just about MacJammers opening-up and telling the story of their collaborations and I didn't want to create restrictions/requirements that might turn people off. I would like to eventually conduct audio interviews of the collaborators to add to the CollabBlab! project pages. I think it would be really interesting to hear some notable MacJams artists describe in their own voices their approach to music-making and to collaboration. This would be sort of a VH1 "Behind the Collaboration" segment that would follow posting of a completed song. |

Such a great idea. I have created a Profile for my first collaboration with Steve Stone (tonestones): Merlyn. The track we will be working on is currently titled "Crystalline Cave." (We are in the midst of a collaboration right now, but this was next on our list.) I've posted the original track that Steve will be adding to, but since "Merlyn" is a new member, the track awaits approval. Are you going to create a CollabBlab profile to help consolidate all this activity? Or just use the Forums? |

I'll talk this over with APOD - our ongoing collab project. Sounds like a cool idea.
It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done. |

Joc, is there a deadline? If not, someone want to do this with me? [Warning to people who say yes, I'm working on multiple things at once.]
