Can You Name This Song?
Wednesday, July 04 2012 @ 09:47 PM CDT

Hello MJers!

So... I was playin' my guitar about a year ago, practicing some 'boom chick' Chet Atkins-picking, and this melody came to me. Ever since then, I used it as an exercise.

I'm pretty sure I heard it before but I'm going crazy trying to figure out what song it is... any ideas?

Three names come to mind when I hear a melody like this one: Nick Drake, Dave Van Ronk, Mississippi John Hurt. Maybe start mining their stuff for clues?

The first 8 sounds like the beginning of the chorus to "One Moment In Time" written by Albert Hammond and John Bettis and performed by Whitney Houston.

It's somewhat reminiscent of this tune, Yeman...

I think the reason why the responses are so varied is that it's a standard folk progression rhythmically and in terms of melody. It's more complex than most, though. It reminds me of an alternate tuning (nick drake) because of the way some of the notes are phrased and held, but that could just be me reading into things.

Like Omusic said, it's a common folk progression, but the one it reminds me of most is Lesley Duncan's "Sing children Sing." It even features the change.

Also possibly, "Run of the Mill" by George Harrison.
