I have a feeling you already know this, but just in case...
Before you do anything with that deck, make sure you clean the heads thoroughly. 90+% (no percentage less, which is diluted with water) Isopropyl alcohol from the drug store applied with cotton swabs will do the trick. When I bought a TEAC 40-4 some years back so I could digitize some of my old demos, I was revisited by the old bugaboos that go with the tape media: Cleaning heads, re-splicing tape, oiling, etc. Very frustrating! But good luck with your Way-Back machine. I hope you have fun.

Have fun with that thing! I remember how thrilled I was when my dad bought me a very nice Wollensack deal and how excellent the sound was (they sold albums on tape back then; not sure if they do now, although my friend at the radio station glommed on to some of the older music they didn't play on tape and gave them to me). The advice from JA is very good--cleaning your heads with alcohol will also get rid of any crackling sounds, etc.

A good reel-to-reel can easily beat a CD in S/N ratio; probably also in distortion. Victor. -- My CD. Use coupon code "macjams" on BandCamp. |

ana what now?
All kidding aside, congrats and enjoy. I would never have the patience to go analog (let alone the outboard gear required). Can't wait to hear the magic you make! Peace be with my friend Jerry! |

I still have my 8 channel Fostex A-80 reel to reel and the accompanying model 450 8 channel mixer. Haven't used it in probably 15 years. I still use the model 450 mixer as a mic preamp for close micing my acoustic kit, but the reel to reel has dust on the cover. Probably dry rotted belts. I gave a friend of mine my Teac simal-sync 4 channel reel to reel probably 10 years ago.
I don't mind digital at all. I bet if i set up a test and had listeners go just by ear, they could not tell me which was digital and which was analog. Just my opinion. Need drums? Look me up... |

nice purchase. you should start charging people to run their tracks through that thing. Would really be nice to run all of your stems through it individually.

Is that number correct? If you're talking tape width it's way more than the 2" used for multitrack, and if you're talking inch/second then it's non-standard and fairly low. So, what gives? Victor. -- My CD. Use coupon code "macjams" on BandCamp. |
