Music Not Politics
Wednesday, April 23 2008 @ 11:34 PM CDT

This is the name of a music advertising group in Second Life and be well aware if you want to play there that they will sweet-talk you up and down and seem like your long-lost buddies. Know full well that they treat venue owners in a very different way and I've got complaints from many of them regarding the gangster tactics they use.

Some of the people who work for Throughthesewalls Moody (Music Not Politics) and Reslez Steeplechase (FCMC) have no idea of what's going on and they love the two of them because they gave them jobs. These people are sweet but misguided and will attack anything that threatens their jobs as they don't realize what's going on in the background to subsidize them.

There are many, many wonderful things about Second Life but those two and that group definitely don't qualify. Be very, very careful as those two are as crooked as they come.

If you need help getting started in there, IM Silas Scarborough. What I'll ask is that you do a short set at my place so I know where you'd best fit, plus we can get your sound dialed in. Then I'll IM some friends who run venues to let them know they need to talk to you. The rest is up to you. It won't cost you a dime and it shouldn't. I'm not a manager and don't want to be. This is a jammers helping jammers thing. The one thing I'll ask is that, for your own sake, you stay the hell away from Music Not Politics and FCMC.

By the way, you've got almost everything you need already. The only thing you're missing is Nicecast software and that goes for $30. It's very easy to configure and *presto changeo* you're live in SL.

Yo Silas, my long lost buddy!

I don't really know anything about second life. But if they have gangsters there, can one go around rape, murder and pillaging too?

I like your subtle reinforcement of themes in the phrases:

1. "be well aware" and "Know full well"
3. "many, many" and "very, very"
4. "What I'll ask is that" and "The one thing I'll ask is that"

Maybe you could add some repetition in paras 2. and 5. ?

You link 4. and 5. nicely with:

" It won't cost you a dime " and " and that goes for $30 "

So, all in all, a successful piece. If I ever waste time in SL. I shall surely know fully, fully well, that these guys are crooks. They're not competitors of yours are they?

For the record- it wouldn't cost a thing to use Second Life. They do not charge people to perform, however, in order to broadcast live (stream) you need a software program called Nicecast... which by the way, is very cool. If you don't want to play live then you always have the option of going into SL and listening to other people play live... again, wouldn't have to cost you a thing (I know you like the repetitive thing).

Do you have to have a special graphics card to do Second Life? Or just one that comes with a regular mac will suffice?

I downloaded nicecast (the trial download version) and it immediately crashed, and it did it every time I tried to open it up. I am on 10.4.11 operating system. I just emailed nicecast support about the crashes.

When I joined and looked around bit a few months ago. I guess I was confused on were the action was.
But thanks for the tips on what to look out for.

Thanks alan for the info though!

It's going to take me months but I'm really wanting to jump in. Someday I'll surprise you at SL. Thanks for the skinny, Silas!

Let's try and answer all the questions in one post:

LydiasDream50: Is Music Not Politics in competition with me

No, I do not and will not work for them. They are pushing up the costs for venues and there is nothing increasing revenues for venues.

DWS: Damned if that evil witch didn't get me too but my podgy body seems a little bit too used to call it middle-aged!

aclarke: Yep, all SL music is free for the listening, just like hearing Ziti that night long ago.

screamalexz: You can be pulling into your driveway at 4:45 and be playing live in front of an audience at 5:00 if you want to do it. No equipment to carry, no hassles at all. It's not a bad way to work up your stage presence.

thetiler: I've used an ATI 1900, ATI 2600, Nvidia 8800 but I've never checked the difference in frame rates. The 1900 was stock in the older Mac Quad and the 2600 comes stock in the newer 8-ways. I took the 2600 out of the new box and put it in the old one and then put the 8800 in the new box. SL has run just fine on all of the above configurations.

I wouldn't have any reservation about going up to Leopard at this time. I was having tremendous difficulties with it but the recent fix to Quicktime has cured the chattering audio problem and the system now runs like a Mac should. Which is a back-handed way of saying I'm not sure you'll find a version of Nicecast that will run on an older version of the OS.

You're right that SL is very confusing at first and it will likely take at least a few days to get accustomed to the oddities of moving around in a virtual world. Much of that can be eased if you have a helper to get you started and I'll be happy to do that. I have no doubt they'll love your music. (Of course they will; everyone else does Smile

Bob6stringer: IM me in-world any ol' time Smile

Much love to you all. I can't get around here as much as I'd like but you're never forgotten.
