Shelf Life
Wednesday, July 02 2008 @ 10:59 AM CDT
What seems to be the shelf life of one of your songs?
You know, when the comments stop and your song ends up in the 99 cent bin at the macjams store. It seems to be 5 or 6 days and then nothing. By the way, do you think traffic is down on this site? Maybe it's just the summer low, but who knows? Dave(should I post another song?)Armbruster |

With my songs I usually get comments for a day or two and then it tends to dry up completely. Sometimes you get a comment out of the blue months later and that is a nice suprise!

I haven't been here for long, but I can see the trend. One week is about my shelf life, just about the length of time it takes to slide off the front page. (My "current" song is getting ignored or else pretty well smacked down at the moment.) I have also gotten "late" comments, usually from people on whose song I have commented, which I always appreciate.
Here's what I do. Instead of only looking at the front page, I look at my two or three favorite genres, where one page has stuff going back a few months. Every couple of weeks I listen to everything I've missed --- a genre orgy --- and comment sometimes. I notice that my late comments never get a reply, as if people tend to ignore their older songs. Anyway, the "choose a genre" button in the top left corner is one of my favorite options here, and it seems that not a lot of people work that way. I'm not sure what to make of that. Doesn't everyone want to listen to EVERYTHING that's posted in the same genre they work in? It's really only about 10 songs or so per month per genre. Nightshade, I'm with you. I think my stuff is far too good to get ignored. But who wouldn't feel that way about their music, eh? |

Hi Dave!
I too get a slew of comments over the first few days, and then it fizzles to nothing. Occasionally I'll get a late comment. Sometimes a new MJer will check out my back catalogue and then leave one or two comments, and that's always a nice surprise; but basically the shelf-life of my songs is pretty short. Seems to be a common experience. This being so, it's odd when someone deletes a bunch of their oldies and a backlash of protests follows. This has happened to me a couple of times... RE site traffic: It does seem to have taken a dip. I suspect mid-summer is the culprit. This also happens around the winter holidays, so there's no need for alarm. MJers are not being quietly abducted by aliens (or disgruntled govt. officials!) one-by-one. At least...not YET! B'wa-hahahaaaaaaa.... 99 cents bin, eh? Naw....Mine all end up in the trash compacter! Be well my friend! |

Looking at a 14-month old song of mine, almost half the comments were posted in the last 6 months, with the first half posted within the first month, mostly in the first week.

The level of traffic (as measured by total participation points) ain't - I've seen it a lot lower. There does tend to be a summer lull and we're well past the iComp 'bounce' now.
