This leaves me sad...

I don't think there are many people left who know how to play drums like Levon Helm, much less sing and play drums. Really one of my favorite drummers ever, The Band was truly something special.

Spent the final years of his creative life playing third rate venues and eclipsed ballrooms.
The scene died long before he did... there will not be another like him. His recordings are a legacy, he probably didn't even own a piece of, ready for the box set? Daug |

I read this article this morning. Sad news to start the day, indeed. Levon's is a one-of-a-kind voice, one of the main things that made the Band's sound so great and unique.

[QUOTE BY= Daugrin] Spent the final years of his creative life playing third rate venues and eclipsed ballrooms.
The scene died long before he did... Third rate venues? Not really. He made 20 movies, at least one a classic. He played all the big festivals, Bonnaroo, Jazz Fest. Winnipeg, Merlefest. For a while he owned a great nightclub in New Orleans and and played there frequently. But because of persistant health issues he mainly stayed close to home playing and hosting "Midnight Rambles" on Saturday nights at his farm/studio in Woodstock. Just about everyone in the roots world played there. In that sense, the the world came to him. And, he won two late Grammys including best Americana record for Dirt Farmer, his 2008 album he made after his 1st bout with cancer. I think he passed on the Grammy ceremony to attend his grandson's christening. |
