I don't think there are many people left who know how to play drums like Levon Helm, much less sing and play drums. Really one of my favorite drummers ever, The Band was truly something special.

Spent the final years of his creative life playing third rate venues and eclipsed ballrooms.
The scene died long before he did... there will not be another like him. His recordings are a legacy, he probably didn't even own a piece of, ready for the box set?

I read this article this morning. Sad news to start the day, indeed. Levon's is a one-of-a-kind voice, one of the main things that made the Band's sound so great and unique.

Third rate venues? Not really. He made 20 movies, at least one a classic. He played all the big festivals, Bonnaroo, Jazz Fest. Winnipeg, Merlefest. For a while he owned a great nightclub in New Orleans and and played there frequently. But because of persistant health issues he mainly stayed close to home playing and hosting "Midnight Rambles" on Saturday nights at his farm/studio in Woodstock. Just about everyone in the roots world played there. In that sense, the the world came to him. And, he won two late Grammys including best Americana record for Dirt Farmer, his 2008 album he made after his 1st bout with cancer. I think he passed on the Grammy ceremony to attend his grandson's christening.

Thanks for setting the record straight John. Levon has been a solid respected presence here in NY in his later days - and indeed the world has come to him. He's also been graced with a very talented daughter Amy - who has followed in his footsteps with her band Olabelle.

Nothing much to add, just feeling quite sad about this one.

Another good man about to leave this earth. The Weight, Up On Cripple Creek, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and many other Band songs have been played by me. Many hours of enjoyment just sitting in a chair and belting out those tunes. Saw The Band in Houston once, both by themselves and then with Bob Dylan. One of the greatest concerts of all time.
