Taylor and Ebony

This is what it looks like when a good man makes a good and ethical decision...
"We have to remember...when it's surrender that's called for, it's not surrender of your brains. It's surrender of your ego. It's a different thing." --Bruce Cockburn |

Very enjoyable.
I am immensely pleased that he is popularizing that second tier stock that has been (really, shockingly) wasted for so long. To my eye it does, in fact, look every bit as compelling in its own way as the top tier stuff. I have to confess, though, that I found myself wondering just how much of Mr. Taylor's income is attributable to guitar sales, and how much of it from the sale of ebony? He does, after all, own 75% of all the legal pure stock on the planet. Whatever his chosen field, I wish him all the best. MoM |

Thanks for posting this, I shared it on my FB page. Glad he's in control and not someone else.

Surprising, that a business man is solution oriented? Follow his public relations efforts here, this is a preemptive bit of salesmanship. One would assume, based on the attacks on the Gibson and Fender Companies, Taylor was advised to get out the good word and do so quickly.
Most of us might agree that Mr. Taylor has devised an acceptable and sane solution to the obvious problem, our friends on the Left would suggest this is an evil man, a 1%er, protecting his ability to exploit labor and resources. While Taylor is in effect dictating the resource and utilization policy on ebony to the free world he's couching his remarks as a concerned citizen and so putting a smile on the biggest issues of our time. That is if one accepts the media as the source for the origin of the current big issues. Frankly, expect more of this... The media is the message. The content of that message is suspect. Daug |

"If you could fly over them... as far as the eye can see..."
You can fly over them. Take a look at the big rain forests with Google Earth. Logging areas are very easy to find, and the size and number of clear-cut areas is staggering. I recommend starting with western Canada and USA. |

Just a few weeks ago I got myself a Martin D-16GT. It is a cheap Martin, about half the price of a D-28. This one has no ebony whatsoever. Bridge and fingerboard are made of "Richlite", which acording to Wikipedia is:
I don't know how much the mateiral effects the sound qualities of the instrument, but in my ears it works just great. If I am happy with the new baby? YEEEES! Just love it! Martin has not saved on the sound on this model. It has such rich qualities play and soundwise. Top made of Solid Sitka Spruce. Sides and back of Solid Genuine Mahogany. Scalloped bracing. I would really recommend the D-16 to anyone who loves Martin guitars but, like me, can't afford more than this. Long ago (36 yrs) I had both a D-18 and a D-28. But I have never had a guitar that give away so much love as this new one. Neither of these oldies had scalloped bracing and I guess that is part of the reason. In my view I would need to go for a HD-28 to get something slightly better. OK, I'm aware that the HD-28 is another type (rosewood sides and bottom). But I like both mahogany and rosewood. And they both have the Martin tone which I am a freak of. OK, I am getting carried away and a bit off topic. Thank you Ed for a very interesting clip! Johannes Curry |

This guy has been searching for better solutions to these problems for a LONG time now and he didn't need the example of the douchebag at Gibson to make him see the light. You are always asking everyone else to be informed, perhaps you'd like to better inform yourself of Bob Taylor's history. Also, I'm surprised to have learned from your post here that conservation and being a good steward of the earth is an earmark of 'the right'. Who knew??? If what I understand about you is your distaste for 'the left', I would've expected you to call him a socialist or fascist for trying to control the lumber market instead of letting the free market dictate the lumber industry. |

Thanks for the feedback EF, lets set the discussion back aright. The context comes from Mr. Taylor. He presents the "just recently" attitude, current events posture, and speaks of recent revelations with log harvesters... I will need to see evidence of Taylor's long term efforts to solve this issue, all we have here is evidence of his business smarts. Perhaps you could share that knowledge with us- so we can be as informed? I never accused Mr. Taylor of rightest conservatism, or of being a good steward. Your fabricating. Mr. Taylor, by his own admission here, controls 75% of the lawfully harvested ebony, he is the free market. Our leftist friends would identify Mr. Taylor as a 1%er, and this has negative connotations based on the re-election strategy of the POTUS. These business folks want their message out in the public to counter the images being created for them in the media. Mr. Taylor took care of that detail with this video. Having an opinion one way or another about Mr. Taylor's efforts has nothing to do with the point I was making. My point, to repeat the idea in another formulation, the message that Mr. Taylor is bringing is carefully scripted and designed to accomplish specific goals. What the content of the message might be is secondary to the media presentation. I was suggesting that this criteria be applied equally to all media messages. I never asked anyone to be informed. Stupidity is obviously the most abundant element in the universe, and I refuse to do anyone's homework, I'm too busy. The demand is for awareness. That is a different thing... Let's be aware of why Mr. T has to do this song in the first place- because he is now using seconds on his fretboards? Naw. Daug |

Well Daug, as far as Taylor's conservation history, and not doing ones homework for them, you can find that out on a google search.
What are Mr. Taylors goals? I would certainly be tooting my own horn if I were able to effect this kind of change in the way things are done. Politics (if that's what you are inferring) would have nothing to do with it. So why should I assume that this is about anything else? I'm aware that when a politician kisses a baby he wants us to vote for him. I'm aware that when a business man boasts of his accomplishments, he wants us to buy his products. I'm aware that not everyone in the 1% has a secret, evil 'Austin Powers' lair. I'm aware that everyone on the left doesn't eat their recently aborted fetuses with a nice organic port wine. What else to I need to be aware of? The illuminati? alien probes? 911 was an inside job? Obama's birth certificate? I don't think this is a song and dance. You might agree if you see this is a pattern the man has lived for more than just the last presidential term. This is a man I likely disagree with on politics, and i can see that this is a good thing, regardles of his personal politics and that his business practices seem to be worthy of emulation by the rest of the 1%. If I'm still misunderstanding you, forget it. I'll just consider you a troll and you can consider me sadly misinformed an we can move on. But I would suggest not writing your forum posts the way you write your music. If you're going to make disparaging comment on a positive forum post, your message should be accessible to everyone. |
