There ya go... ronnielong agrees with me Smile

Here's my original post...
Quote by: Pie
Anyone else think eric clapton is a pathetic excuse for a guitar hero only used by people who know nothing about guitar in discussions. For godsakes... he's done absolutely nothing since he left cream. Just what has he contributed to the world of guitar? Just a load of cover versions and a few pop tunes. Discuss...

...boy, this should be interesting. Smile

Now, perhaps i stated my opinion too vehemently... as a guitar player I think eric clapton is great and i like some of his stuff.

and no y'all ain't EC clients

WRONG!!! I'm a past client and perhaps a future one. I have 'Bad Love and 'Behind The Mask' in iTunes.

As a guitar hero i have a lesser opinion of the man. Nobody cares but if i were to recommend a short list of guitarists for someone just getting intersted in contempory guitar to listen to eric clapton wouldn't be on that list. (List available upon request - or perhaps someone else could start that forum)

Now I've been dumped on from a great height on this forum and i've enjoyed it. Some people have misunderstood me (my fault for not explaining myself in enough detail). it was never my opinion that eric clapton is of no talent. ability or importance. Just not as much a some people would have us believe. IN MY OPINION!!!!!

Part of the original question was 'what has he contributed to the world of guitar?' It's worth noting that nobody has put forward an answer to that question. All that has been suggested to myself and Troy is that we have no right to our opinions because we're not as good as eric at (insert criteria here)

Anyways... seeing as mine and Troy's opinions are of so little importance some people really feel the need to put them down Smile

Hahahahahahah!!!

Of Course I agree with your original post pie.....he is no guitar God. He never was, but neither is B.B King or Frank Zappa or a bunch of other git slingers YOU FORGOT to Mention!!! HAhahahahahahahaha...

Besides, we all know STING ain't a guitar god. But you seem to like him just fine! Smile

So what exactly WAS your point?

Just wanted to pick a fight?

I was just responding to the Cheap Shots Taken at Eric Clapton for no good reason. Plus it was fun....

Oh, and BTW, What has Sting done for the Guitar world lately??

I like Clapton's version of John Hiatt's "Ridin' with the King" that he did with B.B. King. He always seems to have a nice guitar tone and expressiveness, and he doesn't shred, which I like. Some people like shredding, I don't prefer it usually. And he's a pretty good singer. How's that for a mild endorsement? LOL

Can we start a discussion about Kenny G now? Or Michael Bolton? Yawn. Perhaps this discussion where musicians put down other musicians is more interesting than actually listening to music.

pie,
im pretty sho i never said your opinion didn't matter. and the fact that there are 13 pages in this thread people did care or do care. eitherway.

and no pie you are wrong people / listeners ARE NOT clients. clients are "The party for which professional services are rendered" what professional service is rendered when buyin an album?

you buyin or wantin to buy an album does not make you EC's client. you are not EC customer ither, that would be the record labels or the music industry however ya wanna look at it. also the fact ya don't care fo the mans music doesn't make ya anythin "to" him or his label, in the ways of commerce. why should he/they bother caterin to someone who doesn't care fo what he does? would you?

the mere fact that y'all have no idea what clapton contributed speaks volumes. how about layla for staters. regradless of y'all likin these tunes or not they would be consider a "contribution" here is a list of tunage the man has appeared on jusouno:
Babyface, The Day
The Band, "Further On Up The Road"
The Beatles, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Mary J. Blige, "Give Me You"
Jack Bruce, Somethin Els
Jim Capaldi, Some Come Running
Lamont Dozier, "That Ain't Me"
Bob Dylan, Desire
Aretha Franklin, "Good To Me As I Am To You"
George Harrison, "Ski-ing"
George Harrison, All Things Must Pass
George Harrison, "Bye Bye Love"
George Harrison, "Love Comes To Everyone"
Elton John, "Runaway Train"
Carole King, City Streets
John Lennon, Live Peace In Toronto
Christine McVie, "The Challenge"
The Rolling Stones, "Little Red Rooster"
Ringo Starr, "This Be Called A Song"
Steve Stills, "Go Back Home"
Steve Stills, Stephen Stills 2
Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane, Rough Mix
Doris Troy, Doris Troy

see pie when ya'll get a "sound" that the people n players kno people will remember n possibly help ya sell a record, chances are ya kno what ya doin. regardless if we like 'em or not. the record industry is not here to loose money n durin claptons day the label ruled the artist(s) not the other way round. who kno's what deal clapton signed. back then many a soul was sold fo a record deal.

and yes pie, maybe he hasn't "pushed" the boundries of rock n roll like he used to. doesn't make him less of a guitar player or man fo that matter. skipper said it best "when your songs are timeless ..."

if y'all wrote a tune that defined who y'all were AND were signed i will bet y'all all the wheat in canada that you would always put forth that sound. musicians spend all of their lives honin their sound .. eddie van halen, jimi hendrix unmistakable sounds. EC ain't no different. nor is bb king or zappa, lou reed pick ... an icon. they got that way fo a reason and millions of records was not the reason. it was for the contribution to the art of music they are recognized as such. ie the sounds that are undiniably them.

peace

please don't read any of my posts like im angry. cuz im not. just chattin.

Bravo Mr. Andrews!

Nice way to sum it all up.

I was wrong before when I said there was no right answer to this thread...... Because RC makes a lot more sense than Troy or Pie...

I imagine you guys will come back with "its MY opinion" blah blah blah.... But the truth is, this was an asinine Thread to begin with.

Clapton is Timeless, so are all those other Guitar Slingers mentioned above.... why just rip on one of them?? Wink NONE of them are Gods.... but they all make Damn Good music.

And Really.....WTF has STING Done for the world of Guitar lately?

I know, lets pick on STING for no good reason.... since any retard is allowed to pass judgement... there is no need to make a point either.... just fire away!!
