There was one time when I saw Clapton right after he dried out. He was all duded-up and had two totally beautiful women in evening dresses singing on each side of him. Sounds kind of Las Vegas but it was cooler than it sounds. Anyway, Santana had opened for him and he came out to jam with Clapton. And that was the strange part... I thought it was going to be the jam of the century as both of them are in my top five list of favorite guitarists but Santana just fumbled around a little bit and then walked back off the stage. No idea what happened.

I've been generally disappointed with what Clapton has done post-Derek & the Dominoes.
The Cream reunion in May should be interesting. I hope Jack Bruce, who's been recovering from liver cancer and a transplant, has the stamina to get through the shows. IMHO, he was always the special ingrediant in Cream. Steve Winwood was the special part of Blind Faith; Duane Allman, the special part of Derek and the Dominoes. Eric seems to need someone else in the band to push and challenge him.

Jimmy Page's playing on 'Since I've Been Loving You' (especially the live version from the recent DVD) urinates on everything Clapton has ever done from a great height. Although I do quite like 'Behind The Mask' by Mr. Clapton.

C'mon... let's 'ave it!

I don't see much use in badgering Mr. Clapton. He's achieved legend status. I mean he can pretty much just show up and play and he's great. Can we be a bit more constructive?

And last time I checked, this was an art form, not a sport! I'd rather listen to sessions for Robert Johnson or 461 Ocean Boulevard than some shredder, showing of his knowledge of Hungarian Gypsy minor scales at 3000mph!!!

Yes, some of his tracks I think went against good taste, and often he's lacked passion. But when you've influenced or touched as many people, or written at least ONE classic (Clapton has written or co-written several), then come back and spout. I'm all for constructive critique, but us lead guitarists are a bit too competitive. Look at the whole musician.

I teach guitar for a living and replicating Claptons, feel, especially, his vibrato and the articulation of bends aint easy. It's not technically demanding stuff on the whole, but you'd need a lot of soul and phrasing to "cut heads" with him when he's at his best.

i'm not comparing myself to clapton (he's good whilst i'm very mediocre on a good day)... and i didn't mention shredding. in fact the only comparison i did make was to Jimmy Page. I started this post because i had a discussion with someone down the pub who thought eric clapton was the 'king'. I was curious as to others opinions.; Mine is that I think he's overated as a guiarist and a songwriter. I suppose he's OK as a session musician... afterall - that's what the beatles used him as, coz they were all crap on the guitar Smile

silly me Rolling Eyes

I agree with RC.

Y'all don't have the right to cry about Clapton. He is a LEGEND. You are all so cynical and I fear you have forgotten about the music.

How FULL of yourself can you be when you get to the point where you can judge Eric Clapton. For F*ck Sakes!!

If you want to trash anybody, Trash SANTANA, he can only seem to play in his favorite E min. Pentatonic scale every time he needs to solo for a bit. All his shit sounds the SAME. SANTANA is NOT a Legend in my book.

Whoops, now I gone an done it, I trashed Santana the way y'all Trash Clapton.

Oh, well...

Carry on.

Twisted Evil

But just remember this..... When Eric Claptons name was mentioned, NOBODY said WHO is Eric Clapton?? Right. Now tell me. Do you think anyone knows YOUR name?? (other than your own Mother, of course).

Case closed. Y'all are NOTHING, and Eric Clapton himself wouldn't give two Sh*ts about what WE all think.

So continue to Bi*ch if ya want.... it won't get ya anywhere... Wink
