i grew up in SF and was way into the thrash metal scene when all those bands were in the clubs. long time fan of Metallica but gotta say: they have been releasing crap for years, really not a surprise to me.

Listening to the iTunes previews. Hm. Sounds like decent backing tracks, but not great, and sometimes the spoken vocals work, but in other places it's like mr Reed is sort of dictating to the real singer how he imagines the song should sound.

To an extent I think the bad press is so bad because Metallica used to be a band that meant something, that a sizable portion of the listening audience cared about. If this was a new band, unknown, the reaction would be "boy, these guys are _bad_". The "worst ever" has a lot to do with the context, not so much with the music.

Anyway. Now that I'm done typing I can stop listening to the previews. Thank $DEITY.

Victor.

Yeah, the last Metallica album I bought was Master of Puppets. I couldn't listen to anything after that. Wouldn't it be interesting to take the Metallica of old (Ride the Lightning years) and transport them to see the current Metallica? I'm sure they would think it's crap too. Funny how time changes people...

I pretty much gave up on all their releases after "And justice for all" .. what did I miss? Wink [it was all that dut, dut dut dut, durra dut, dut dut dut dut, dut, ..drove me nuts]

As for their covers: I like some of their covers from the Garage days revisited...Budgie, Diamond Head...

Call me old fashioned, but I just listen to the classic stuff from their first 3 albums mostly... anyway "'ain't ma bitch" - it's Ronnies Wink

Being curious, I once bought one of their albums at a garage sale.

Take the hypotenuse except when crossing a busy street.

Call ME old fashioned, but that would make you a "fair-weather fan", apb Wink

I guess some folks aren't as loyal as I am Wink

I guess if you've been around for as long as they have (30+ years), you're bound to make shitty records (Lulu, St. Anger ect...)

Not like the Rolling Stones or the Beatles hit it out of the park on every album... Wink

And in the metal arena? Slayer? Anthrax? NOPE, and Nope. The only thing those bands did was re-hash the same old shit, the same old formula - they never grew musically.

I still like Metallica for what they were, and what they CAN be... But this latest release is pretty pathetic... Lou Reed really didn't help the situation either Wink Hahahahaha

Lol - I guess I am... could have been worse, I could have said when they cut their hair, I stopped lovin' 'em" Wink but I guess for me, the weather did change somewhat with the loss of Cliff, I tried.. they just weren't the same band anymore- it's tough to replace anyone of course. Still a fan of sorts for what they have done, just I guess what I mean is I'm just not overly disappointed in them anymore... have their best days passed? I dunno.. I can always be surprised.
