I'm going to post this idea even though I know I'll regret it later.

MacJams should release a series of free "best-of" genre compilations based on music submitted in 2005, each compilation based on a particular genre. I think 10-12 genre compilations would be ideal, each with 10-12 songs. That number seems broad enough to speak to diverse audience tastes while also providing a suitable category for every flavor of music.

This could be a difficult process to manage. I have two proposals:

PROCESS ( A )
After identifying the genres (via forum discussion or admin fiat) members would have one week to nominate songs for each compilation and one week to vote for which songs get included - one vote per member, per genre. This would require some technical wizardry from the admins.

PROCESS ( B )
After identifying the genres (via forum discussion or admin fiat) members would have one week to nominate songs for each compilation. Members also volunteer or nominate others for positions on "genre panels." Any member can be on any ONE genre panel. There should be a minimum number of member points required to participate (say, 250) The genre panels each have one week to democratically choose (via email listserve) which of the songs nominated for their gennre will appear on the compilation.

2005 Compilations would be a great marketing tool for MacJams. The announcement of 12 free CDs is something newsworthy (even if those CDs only exist in download form). Its the kind of thing that a MacAddict, Mac User, and any number of mac or music related magazines, blogs, and info sites mighht pick up on. It would also provide a nice touchpoint for new visitors to the MacJams site to quickly experience the "best" of the kind of music they come here to find.

ahh sounds similiar to my charity cd idea. it sounds great.

i think the problem is so many people could be chosen for each category. most of the guys and girls i've met here have been extremely nice and all deserve the award. seconding a previous nominee caroline is definately one of the nicest people i've met. i also find i may not know enough of the artists to have a vote that's valid enough. and thank you cipher for the nomination Smile it's nice to know you think of me. i don't think it's something that should hurt ne one's feelings, though i think it may not be a very good voting process, and i think some of the categories aren't the best/

I'm so happy that other people are posting votes becasue if Tom Atwood were allowed to decide, we'd all be wearing blue ponchos by February and clutching our copies of American Plain to our chests.

Not sure if you are A.) threatening a lawsuit or B.) nominating "American Plain" for Best CD of the Year 2005?

Becasue?

A. Talk to my attorney (Chikoppi)
B. Thanks for the nomination

You know, maybe we don't have to have winners. Why can't we just post our votes in this thread and thereby recognize lots and lots of people and find lots of new music we may have missed? That way it's not really a popularity contest, since it's not a contest, just a thread for everyone to post their year end "Best of" Lists.

Excellent idea Lisa! Smile

I'm suspicious of alley-oops ability to tally. I've heard rumors of him counting with his socks off, so this tallying thing troubles me. Smile

Are you suggesting that maybe he suffers from tally-toesis? Put your socks on!

Favorite words I used in one of my own tracks: by Tobin Mueller The Fall
Favorite collaboration: with Tobin Cigarette and the Actress
Macjammer I am most thankful for: Tobin
Best songs when you're in a hurry: jonx
Favorite fan: EdensEve
Favorite lipstick: Emily
Favorite spoken word track other than mine: Misanthrope Seeks Same (cjorgensen)
Song most likely to succeed in the wider world: Snap Krackle Pop
Best drinking song: The Wild Rover
Best song to listen to drunk: It Ain't Fair

Since there were no Macjams CDs for 2004, maybe the first one should be inclusive of all prior tracks, or there should be a set for 2004 too. And only major genres like traditional blues, poetry, barroom jazz, and music for lovers should be included. I hate listening to music unless I can smoke and drink to it. "Music for Smokers" would be a great title? Everyone chips in to pay. Or at least everyone on the CDs. Everything costs something.
