Jack, you started the thread so I think you should get to decide how it goes down. No matter what, someone is going to have to do pairing at some point. Perhaps a list of producers and a list of songs/artists to date would be a good start. I will be a producer or supply tracks for a song, whichever is needed.

I think maybe people could state what DAW they are using. I use garageband 08. (The version of garageband is important because 08 will not open GB 09 or 11 files). If DAWs don't match up, each track could be soloed dry I suppose too. Not ideal for midi files though, which the producer may want to manipulate.

Logic 9. I can open up GB files, but not sure if L9 will open the new GB files. you can send me dry tracks if you're on something else. I'll work on any type of music, and pairing is okay with me. I am in school, work and have 2 kids so I probably won't be able to send out rough mixes and take your feedback into account; although I will try my best to make it sound nice and will give a detailed account of my process afterwards.

OK relax.... this isn't another challenge .. yet. There are 2 really cool challenges to take us into the new year. This is something I have been thinking about a lot lately. I have listened to several "versions" of tracks by MJ artist who have allowed a "re-production" of their work and hearing such amazing variations accomplished simply from a new idea in the final mix. So...would there be any interest in a "Producers Challenge"? The aim ...I think.... would be to pair artist to producer .... have a specific tune re mixed and produced. The cool thing about this challenge would be "everyone" has a shot to participate. We all mix our tunes. So drakonis could be a producer for dimm witness ..... imagine that. Some details to work out I am sure. Is this idea just dumb?

Updated 11/13/10

so here we go a first "listing"

Artist:
dimm witness
jgurner
ageofthedeathtree
tf10music
strangedream
davisamerica
ted 23
jdholliday
Mark Holbrook
davajonah
particledots

Producers:
crissew
chikoppi
VicDiesel
davajonah
michael2
ageofthedeathtree
Vic Holman
particledots
alimar
davajonah

The guidelines:

A random pairing of artist/producer (this is a challenge after all). DAW issues will be worked out as best they can. Example: If I am working with someone who does not use GB or Logic then the artist will send MP3 or AIF files and we will work from there. This is not a "let's be perfect" challenge it is about learning what can be done from various fields of play. The producers main job will be not to "re define" the artist but to enhance the work of the artist. However .... if an artist says "Give me a total make over" then that is also in the scope of work. It will be important for the producer to do a little ground work to understand the artist and their work.

Random pairing will happen on Dec. 1st, 2010 and challenge deadline will be Feb 1st 2011.

Chosen tracks to work on need to be posted (if not already) at the same time of the deadline for the finished "produced" track.

A detail from the artist and producer on their process would be included on the final track.

OK .... what have I missed?

Uhhhhhhh me? I threw my hat in on page 4 as a producer.

Are we talking about new tunes or tunes from our existing catalog or either/both? And, if so, will the artist or producer pick the tune, or both?

Well if I sign up, (IF--because I'm not sure my music will fit in) it would surely be as an arteest. I know absolutely nothing about producing.

As I read through these comments, mostly about a producer's role, I kept thinking that a producer would be very similar to an interior decorator. Even though they specialize in a certain style they also must use their overall skills to 'fit' their client's style to some degree, guiding them to the best arrangements for what they have to work with.

Just my two cents.

good analogy. BTW: your music will fit in fine; enter.

Ja-a-a-a-ack, he whined, dipping his toes gently into the unknown waters, I might like to play.

I (now) love people messing with my little pieces: it's fun to see where they can go. I still have all my original GB files (except one, but it's never been posted). So I can supply whatever's needed should anyone choose/be assigned me.

I had a lot of fun with SmokeyVW's and Drakonis's tunes but they were both instrumental MIDI files. Other than the fact that I have no real production tools for mastering, I would feel comfortable working on something similar. I don't think I should be let loose on any serious vocalising, fingerpicking, pianoing, or even drumming ;-)

* Or so I'm told
