Re:live rig

I wish I could buy you all a drink or something. In between these forum posts and reading lots I think im learning a good deal!
It seems to me that the debate between powered speakers vs passive speakers is mostly a matter of preference, based on a)ability to expland, b) portability/convenience(power outlets too). I still havent made up my mind on that. what I HAVE clarified is this: For now, since we are just getting started, we will mostly be doing smaller gigs on our own, and bigger gigs will mostly have their own equipment. SO, i'm looking at putting mainly vocals through the PA. could the KC-550 handle the keys AND the kick? maybe a tiny mixer would help to clean up the bass a little? That way, I could get mains for the vocals, and run the keys and kick through the keyboard amp. itd be a smaller setup, easy to transport, wouldn't break the bank.. does that sound like a reasonable setup? 2 15's powered speakers or passive with a powered mixer/amp for vox and centering and 1 KC-550 for keys and kick workable? http://level7.bandcamp.com/ http://rimanirhymes.bandcamp.com/ |

If we're talking a regular acoustic drumkit, you'll need monitors, and with 3 singers I'd recommend them anyway, particularly if you're doing a lot of harmony work, if possible with a separate feed for each.
As to speakers and power, 20 watts through a 10 is plenty if you're running a quiet stage. 80W (true RMS) through a good quality 12 and horn minimum if you're running with real drums (and when I have my head close to cymbals, I really like a couple of hundred thru a 15.) The more I think about this, the more I feel you should audition a few soundmen (with their own or rented rigs) and use your favourite for a few gigs before investing in all the stuff. I know carrying this particular person is a significant extra burden, but it would smooth out your early gigs no end. And give you a good idea as to what you really need. Scope out the competition, too. See what they're using and what's common to the ones you like. Talk and listen to your music store; a good one doesn't want you walking out with the wrong gear, it costs them too much in the long run. Stage lights? Noli bastardi carborundum |

Thanks so much again folks. I think I have a much better idea of what I need to look for and what I need to research more. I won't be actually getting anything until the beginning of the small semester, as we are all in different cities this summer. For now, I have three theoretical rigs, a power amp one, a powered mixer one, and a powered speaker one. All in all I think I'd be dropping $1200 for everything before monitors, which I still would like to research more. I really appreciate the great input.

Well.. I always associate BDP with KRS-One, the emcee, but I think in the beginning it was a collective. Now he just goes by KRS-One.. and he's still active! He doesn't top charts or anything anymore, but he's very respected as a hip hop "scholar." He does a lot to promote awareness and understanding about hip hop culture. Last album I heard of his was "Hip Hop Lives" with producer Marley Marl. 2007. There might be something more recent by now, but I havent checked it out yet. If anyone knows of anything more recent feel free to chime in.
