Van Halen would be at the top of my list, on the other hand, I almost never listen to him. I rate him solely by how much awe he inspired in me when I was 10 years old. It's all so arbitrary. Was Johnny Marr on the List? I HATED the smiths when I was a kid growing up in the 80's, but now I think that dude was amazing. Same with Jeff Beck. I'd try to be a hater about RS making lists, but I do it all the time. Mark Knopfler, Nels Cline and Derek Trucks can bring tears to my eyes in an instant. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't even be on someone else's lists..... ....and John Frusciante changed my life back in '92. I completely switched directions on guitar after hearing Blood Sugar. Gosh. This topic could have as many posts as the OWS thread if we don't watch out. |

I think they nailed it.
I don't believe it is possible to challenge them on any of their picks or the rankings, including Joni Mitchell at #75. My dog, who is highly opinionated, said to me, "but she only plays open tunings!" To which my reply was, "Dog, irrespective of the dubious veracity of that statement, consider this: She sometimes did not play all six strings at once! That alone would entitle her to a place on this list." My dog, chagrinned beyond recognition, muttered something that sounded like "woof," then turned around about ten times and flopped down for a well-deserved nap on my winter coat. I am particularly pleased that wankers from the Jazz world did not make it onto the list. I double-checked — Rolling Stone's list just says "guitarists," meaning, I guess, people who play guitar, in any genre — so they obviously considered people from other genres like Jazz Classical, and Flamenco, and rejected them. For good reason, I'd say. Check out these names, which I found at another website, ranking the 100 greatest Jazz guitarists: 1. Wes Montgomery 2. Django Reinhardt 3. Pat Metheny 4. Joe Pass 5. Charlie Christian 6. John McLaughlin 7. Allan Holdsworth 8. Grant Green 9. John Scofield 10. Jim Hall 11. Larry Coryell 12. Kenny Burrell 13. Bill Frisell 14. Larry Carlton 15. Pat Martino 16. Mike Stern 17. Al Di Meola 18. Lenny Breau 19. Herb Ellis 20. John Abercrombie 21. George Benson 22. Lee Ritenour 23. Tal Farlow 24. Lonnie Johnson 25. Eddie Lang 26. Robert Conti 27. Johnny Smith 28. Bill Connors 29. George Van Eps 30. Jimmy Bruno 31. Jimmy Raney 32. Hank Garland 33. Joe Diorio 34. Barney Kessel 35. Ed Bickert I don't believe any of these guys is on Rolling Stone's list, nor should they be. They are wankers, all of them. I know I said that already, but my dog told me to say it again. And get this: Classical guitarists are so bad they I couldn't even find a "Top 100" list for them. I checked parts of two pages of Google results, too! I doubt the results would have been any better had I checked a third page. Because Classical guitar is inherently lame, that's why! So, to delusional strummers such as Andres Segovia, Julian Bream, John Williams, Christopher Parkening, David Russell, Kazuhito Yamashita, Sergio Assad, Manuel Barrueco, Dušan Bogdanović, Roland Dyens, Eliot Fisk, Martha Masters, Ana Vidović, Pepe Romero, and Angel Romero, I say this: GET A JOB!!! Preferably one that does not involve playing guitar. Either that, or plug in your axe so that we can actually hear it! Just sayin'. And Flamenco guys such as Paco de Lucía, Juan Martin, Carlos Montoya, Paco Peña, Juan Serrano, the entire Gypsy "Kings" (Come on! I seriously doubt any of these guys is Royalty!) Jessie Cook, and yes, even Ottmar Liebert, can join them. That kind of music may be popular in some freakish niche market, but trust me, it doesn't cut it when compared to the likes of Joni Mitchell's shredding solos. Yeah! Who's with me? |

Yeah totally subjective of course....one crashing chord from Pete T means more to me than the poodle headed rockers practicing their scales at hyperspeed. Haven't read the full list yet though..always contentious. Funny how its always guitar players and not keyboard players or drummers that have this rating system?

What, no Django Reinhardt?
That for me makes this list not worth the virtual paper it's virtually written on... Cheers Dick Hanging in with the out crowd (All rights reserved) |

Thank you very much, Clark... nicely done. It's ALWAYS the dog's point of view I'm looking to for clarity when it comes to these inane lists of rankings. I know I can always count on you to provide that critical canine perspective. Jazz? Classical? Flamenco? Are they kidding? mere Puppy Chow.

Your list is dubious. First of all, Pat Martino should be on the list twice for pre and post-brain surgery. And you totally left off Baden Powell. Apparently you have no respect for Brazilian guitarists, so I have no respect for your opinions. |
