Lines on my imac screen
Wednesday, March 26 2008 @ 08:51 PM CDT

A few months ago a vertical line appeared on my iMac screen. Now I have 3 annoying lines. Of course my computer is no longer under warranty, but it's only about 2 years and a few months old. I've seen other forums on other sites about this, but just wondered if anyone here has had this problem or heard of any good solutions.

I've seen a few reports of this problem and it seems to be a problem with the hardware. I'd say the first thing to do is talk to your Apple store, just in case this is something that they're willing to correct outside of the warranty, since this is a known problem. I'd go in armed with a ton of data you've collected online from other people with the identical problem. There are some YouTube videos out there.

(I'd go on a busy day with lots of people in the store who can hear you talking about your faulty merchandise.)

Barring any solution from Apple, probably the least expensive fix to your problem is to buy a new monitor and plug it into the iMac and use it instead of the iMac monitor. It's kind of nutty, but it will cost less than getting a new iMac, especially when your current one is perfectly good except for the display. It doesn't have to be an Apple monitor. You can get a gigantic one to make yourself feel better.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

You're not the only one. I've had my G5 17" Imac for a while now and have just got a vertical yellow line through my screen that I cant get rid of, in fact there are hundreds of cases of it mostly on 17" imac & 17" G4 powerbooks with W8 serial no's. See crosspond.com/apple/home.

Check this Apple thread out:

and then check this site out on Imac Lines:

I know who I am and you know who you are, but who and the hell do they think they are?

OK, the above links will probably help more than this but I just wanted to mention that I had an (also known) problem with my PowerBook G4 screen - the lower third started flickering and eventually went dead. This appears to be due to some faulty contacts within the LCD screen unit.

I took it to the local Mac store and they quoted an insane amount to fix it. (I don't think they even opened the laptop. Anyway, in the end I ordered the LCD unit fromhttp://www.powerbookmedic.com. Even with postage and import sales tax it was about half the price of what stores in Europe wanted. And something like a quarter of what the Mac store wanted.

Replacing it went OK. After I put everything back together, I'm left with several spare screws. *shrug* but nothing wobbles.

Good luck.

Well it took me four plus months to finally call them, but since there were some requests to report back about how it turned out...

Apple seemed to know about the problem because when I mentioned it the lady quickly quoted me a fee 49,350 (yen that is). Around $500 USD. Seeing as how my Power PC is slowly becoming obsolete (I can't watch NBC Olympic coverage because their video only supports intel versions of Safari and Firefox) I may just consider upgrading.

It does make me a little wary about buying another imac. Maybe it would be better to have the monitor separate after all. Any opinions?

I just don't have the warm fuzzy feelings about Apple that I used to have. Sad to say. Sigh.
