Can it really be oldies?
Wednesday, June 11 2008 @ 08:55 AM CDT

Normally I don't consider myself old-
But as I was driving to work today and rocking out in my car to The Cars, Just What I Needed and then Billy Joel's, Scenes From an Italian Restaurant- I realized I was the Oldies station...

Are these songs really oldies?

And furthermore, in ten years when I turn on the Oldies Staion to hear some of the old greats- am I going to hear Britney Spears and Snoop?

I feel old now- I'm going to go drink some metamucil.

You and me, babe.

It used to be that oldies stations played music before 1970. Then the seventies crept in, and they now seem to be well into the 80s.

I think I like the oldies best that pre-date my interest in pop music. Sixties stuff.

The later stuff seems to be marketed to people who grew up in that era and whose tastes never developed beyond what they liked college. I've actually once heard a station call "You'll never hear a song you can't sing along with". Gag me with a really big spoon!

I think we can safely say that if we hear it in the elevator ... it is now classed as an oldie .... I also believe that some of those MIDI versions of current tunes automatically turns them into oldies !

i've often pondered this; or actually recoiled in fear at this. it's going to really freak me out when i hear the Pixies and Nirvana, and my little girl is yelling "change the station" from the back seat. at least the walkers then will probably be equipped with wi-fi.

I'm glad I am not alone out here, feeling pathetic for rocking out to Benny and the Jets.

I've been unable to find that Doonsbury episode where Mike is grooving to "Satisfaction" and his hipper, younger, brother is looking like "What? What? Am I in an elevator?"

It's a proven fact that, where music is concerned, the great majority of people 'stick' at the age of 13
