Re:My 1st Mac - what laptop should I buy?
Saturday, August 08 2009 @ 12:46 PM CDT

I agree with the "screen real estate" thing. I am using a 2006 MBP 15" and love the space it provides for GB. Because the time is slowly coming for me to get a new laptop (because, you know, I NEEEED one Razz), screen size is somewhat important. I'd prefer the 13" laptop, but after using my wife's MacBook, I realize it's too small for GB (now that I'm spoiled).

So, there you have it. Get a 15" because I like it. lol

I said don't disturb me when I'm cleaning my room!

Personally I'd prefer the 17" just for the extra screen real estate. GB might be ok on a 15" though. It's just my preference.

Also, as others have noted. Go for the 7200 RPM hard drive. I can't stress this enough, don't buy your RAM from Apple. RAM upgrades are relatively simple on macs these days and Apple charges an arm and a leg comparatively for their build to order RAM upgrades. There are many other companies out there that will sell you RAM at half the price Apple charges.

I like crucial myself, though they're a tad bit more expensive, you usually get good quality RAM from them. Most of the time they will also list certain RAM they have for mac specifically. Last time I went RAM shopping I got lost in a sea of technicalities (EEC, non-EEC, DDR2/3, 667MHz, 1066MHz, etc.) I found some that said "for mac pro" and bought that ; ) The modern mac continues to dull my tech savvy with it's "works great out of the box" and "doesn't break" stability.

I really don't miss OS9, I swear ; )

definitely don't buy RAM (or anything other than a computer) from Apple.

that too stable to be tech savvy comment is on the money. i have a PC at work and it mostly gets used by our stock guy now. of course the dude couldn't resist the allure of online porn and got it infected with 23 viruses and some of it was deep in the root directory. took me a few minutes to get my IT guy hat on and figure out what to do. was ugly, couldn't move anything around on the desktop. so glad I use macs, although i suppose the day is coming when we will get hit too.

if there is an option for a 7200rpm drive, get that with it.

I just bought a 15" and there was an option to have a large 5400 drive, or a somewhat smaller at 7200. I believe the faster drive was even $50 cheaper.

Oh, and I spent another penny (actually, $200) to have a matte screen installed by TechRestore.com. Well worth it. Those glossy screens are stupid! Stupid! STUPID!!
