Moving to a new Mac
Tuesday, August 21 2012 @ 04:56 AM CDT

I'm thinking of getting a new iMac and wonder how difficult it is moving stuff across from the old iMac.

I'm guessing that data won't be such a problem as I can back it off to an external drive and then load to the new Mac but it's the applications I'm worried about. For instance, Logic. I went from LE7 to LE 8 to Pro 8 then Pro 9 so I have loads of disks (not sure I even know where they all are now) and different registration keys. Can the software just be ported across?

Any suggestions or advice would be very welcome.

Cheers

Your new Mac should come with a program that just shifts everything across (you may need a lead to do it - ask where you buy). Programs, settings, the lot should just work on the new Mac. Well, that's been my experience...

If you look in utilities, you will find a tool "Migration Assistant" that is what you are looking for.

You can read how it works here:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889

check compatability with the 64/32 programmes

some of the 32 bit programmes/plugins may not work on the new mac which i believe is 64 bit only

i know its a hassle to reinstall loads of big programmes but its probably safest...

transferring documents and files should be no problem at all

Don't get rid of your old Mac 'til you're happy everything's working right on the new one.

Good catch Damien. Dick, most of the companies that sell Macs as well as apple stores will transfer your old programs that are compatible to your new Mac or at least set you up to do it yourself with a contact number for support.
