Preamp
Tuesday, October 31 2006 @ 02:03 PM CST
Does anyone know of a good mic pre? I'm using an M-Audio FireWire Solo interface currently and wanted something with a little more definition, if that's the right word.
Thanks... |

I've been using a Behringer Tube Ultragain Mic200 and I really like it - gives me a good tone on acoustic guitar, mandolin and fiddle plus it works well for both recording and performing live.

What's your price range? Do you want a dedicated preamp, or an audio interface that has preamps included? Tube or solid state? Lots of factors here. I'm guessing you're not asking for an Avalon 737.

Say, Brother, How Fat is the Checkbook on this one? Personally, I always recommend Buying the Best that you can, at the Time, so you don't throw it away when you buy The Good One, later, Eh? PreSonus: BLUETUBE - Only one under $500 that works. Uses a 12AX7 pretty Effectively. THE ADL 600 - TUBES - Studio Quality ($1800) at half the Price! HARDY: (TUBES) M1 Personal, or the M2 (just North of $1200, I believe). MANLEY: Mic EQ 500 - TUBE Pre, With Tube EQ, (around $2900) VOXBOX - STUDIO Level. Tube Mic Pre, Tube Compressor,EQ, Limiter, and De-esser ($4000), BUT You'll Never have to buy another One. If you're Building a System, buy the Best you can (there's always Ebay). Experimenting - PreSonus, Focusrite, etc. Make Sure that you have the right Mics for the Pre (impedence, Ohm ratios)! Any decent Pre can make a HUGE difference; the Right Mic/Pre combination and you won't recognize who is singing/playing. There are real good, inexpensive Mics, but need the right Pre AND real or digital Compressors for Vx Tracks. Best Regards, Cooper "What you Don't use, You Lose." Get Rockin' |

coop - have you ever heard the Avalon 737? I went to a demo at Guitar Center and it sounds freakin' amazing. Definitely my next preamp purchase. Of course, it probably won't be for another year or six.

You can't beat the price for the ART Tube MP. I know of 2 artists with major releases, that have high end gear and this "low" quality tube pre - Solvent and David Kristian. They can be found for under $50. I've seen them on ebay for $20. Cheers!

I know Springclock is big on the Presonus Blue tube which is a dual channel pre. They also make a single channel version simply called the Tube pre for a fraction of the price. Word on the street is that if you swap out the cheap chinese tube that comes stock in it with a groove tube or better that it really makes these units come to life.
(a relatively simple procedure) I'm looking into buying a tube pre of some sort soon, i'm still researching what to buy, but right now I'm leading towards the presonus stuff. |
