New IMacs & ILife.

Save the date: August 7 for new iMac, iLife to emerge early? July 17, 2007 - Reliable sources have zeroed in further on the release date for Apple's revamped iMac since our last report, pointing to an announcement on August 7. Meanwhile, preliminary signs suggest Apple may be ready to release its next-generation iLife suite around the same time in an effort to further bolster the iMac's appeal ahead of the back-to-school buying season. advertisement Multiple sources have said Apple's highly anticipated iMac revision is expected in the first week of August. The revamped iMac will represent the first substantial upgrade to the system since it initially adopted Intel processors in January 2006, and will sport an entirely new brushed aluminum enclosure. Word of iLife's appearance in August is less certain. Sources have said since late 2006 that the next versions of iLife and iWork would not be released until Leopard hits shelves, with both suites set to take advantage of new technologies in Mac OS X 10.5. Other sources have more recently said Apple is already making preparations for the release of the new iLife, something that ordinarily wouldn't happen so soon if iLife was tracking for an October release alongside Leopard. Earlier this year, Think Secret published details of the next version of iWork, including early images of the company's forthcoming spreadsheet application. I know who I am and you know who you are, but who and the hell do they think they are? |

There was also earlier speculation that the new iLife suite would *only* work with Mac OS X 10.5 or better.
I wonder if that is still the case. ![]() Certainly wouldn't be much use, while waiting for The Leopard.

Part of the problem with the somewhat paradoxical-sounding *increasing miniaturization* of the iMac, is its corresponding lack of options. The G4 (table lamp) iMac had a reliable Pioneer superdrive that continues to perform reliably to this very day. The G5 iMac's sleek new design required the use of a more compact drive, a Matshita, which has drawn legions of problems and complaints from G5 iMac buyers. Aside from the pedestrian functional problems with the drive, a common problem was that the drive spewed out discs like targets at a trap shooting competition. Although I haven't looked in awhile, there were no other internal replacement drives available. When AppleCare replaced mine, it was just another Matshita. I hope they do better on this next generation of iMacs.

They did on the Intel iMacs. My G5 iMac performed as you say and I learned to hold my hand next to the slot to catch the CD. This one ejects in a nice polite dignified manner. Newly Nerfed, a home for disabled geekery. |
