French Toast needs help
Wednesday, August 15 2007 @ 09:16 PM CDT
Ok here is my situation.......I have a Pc and a Mac both laptops . The
only internet connection I have is a Wireless PCI Card that goes into
the Side of my PC .I just bought a airport extreme for the iBook g4.
I have a bunch of Wi-Fi connections around me that I can pick up with
my PC laptop but when I installed the airport card nothing comes up
as being able to connect .? This sux cause it means I waisted 50
bucks for nothin . I want to use my Mac again for internet connections
. Now is there a way to get my Wireless PC card to act as a wi-fi
spot or is there any other way of getting a connection using my
extreme card ? Getting a Pc and a Mac to talk seems to be a hopeless
endeavor . I did see something on the net that allows you to make a
Pc into a Wifi connection but it was using a land connection then
transmitting it out over the wireless card . Does any one have any
advice or help? Im still mildly retarded when I comes to computers
although Ive got a few skills .....so not too in depth on the verbiage
but I can dance a little . Thanx so much computer heads I appreciate your responces in advance.

If your PC can see other networks, then your mac should too. Here's a few basics that might help-
I hope I didn't miss anything.

For sizzle Mike Dizzle . Everthing you said here I have done . It doesnt show any of the wifi spots around me that my Pc can pick up . ? Im confused cause I thought it would with no problem . Its not even recognizing when I turn my mac into a wifi . I thank you for the pictorial.....Im goin to go to a starbucks or the library or someplace that has strong connection to see if it picks it up there . I hope. Id still like to be able to connect at the house....have any ideas about how to connect using a wireless PCI card ?

There's something I'm missing for sure. It's been a long time since I installed an airport card.
You could try opening "About This Mac" under the Apple menu, then select "More Info." Look to see if System Profiler is recognizing the Airport card.
Going to Starbucks (or other) is a good experiment also.

Im thinkin tha the connections around me are from personal wireless routers in other peoples homes .Dont know if this would make a difference like there not compatible with a mac but they are with pc . I live in a big appt complex so there are like 5 different ones ......ones called linksys......actiontec.......netgear.... im thinkin there wireless routers ? .....ive got the air port ID number and the system profiler says its installed . It shows up in the net work status as .....airport is turned on but is not connected to a net work .

Yea, your absolutely right about the routers! When I'm traveling with my powerbook, I'll find any available network- more and more are password protected these days, though.
Whatever networks your PC sees your Mac should see as well. It's probably something simple I've overlooked. If I think of anything else and you're still having trouble, I'll let you know.
If you haven't already tried this- when you click the airport signal icon in the upper right of the screen, there's an "Open Internet Connection" option that might give some more clues as to why it's not working.

hmmmm well my PC can use them there not protected .......and they dont show up anywhere on the mac.......I figured the airport card would act like my pc and tell me when there are signals around me if there locked out or not. I dont see a window or anyplace to detect the wireless connections on the mac . Or do they just show up under the small icon in the finder bar on top? I open the "open internet connection" and there is on/off , network.. where it says create network or other and then one showdowed out that says no network selected.and then signal level and there is none. There is for sure something fishy here if you say itll pick up any signal then Im missin somethin .......thanx for your help by the way Mr Mik Deez

Yep, in the 1st picture I posted, there's a little check mark next to Home, which is my network here. When I'm traveling, all available networks are listed in that same area. That's where you should be seeing all of the router names you mentioned earlier.
I know there are folks here that know way more about this than I. Hopefully they'll chime in and tell you what you'll need to do to fix it.

I did some real searching and sence you said that I should be seeing networks I thought well there must be something wrong with the anttena and shure enough if you dont push it in far enough like 98 % of the way into the card it wont pick up signals......stress relived indeed and now i can use my mac again.Sweet jesus it feels good . Thanx for all your brainstorming Mik Diznizle I appretiate
