Re:Grail Tones (guitar player thread)

A compressor will help contain the volume difference when you use it after distortion, but may be pretty noisy. And you may not like what it does to your dynamics.

Another way to go may be to use an attenuator (I love my Weber MASS) so you can run the power tubes hot all the time - this will shorten the lives of the power tubes, but a lot of people are starting to see them as 'the answer' to getting one's amp to behave consistently from gig to gig, using natural power amp compression to somewhat level out volume differences.

What pedal you recommend to keep it on
while you are playing rhythm then when you
switch to your lead pick up with higher volume
will help you to have a powerful tone ?

i like using an MXR micro amp for this sort of thing live. you can either set it up for a slight volume boost, or you can also set it up to get a little overdrive as well.

Interesting ...so with this I ll keep it on all the gig and still
I can switch between pickups with volume adjustment to let my
Rhythm level smoothly switch to Lead mode with no loss and I dont
need to go back and forth turn it on and off ?

The answer, of course, is 'maybe'. Much depends on your playing style, and how clean you want your cleans and how dirty your dirty. Certainly a good starting point.

its tricky on how to describe the tone cos I would want lil dirt
on the Rhythm (never play clean)

I m going for this Micro Amp ..gonna forsake my Ibanez chorus
which I feel it doesnt make any work as my Marshall has a fabulous
chorus .Here we go another adventure !

Thanks a lot Folks !

Reading a review, I see you have a dirty channel. Can you make that work the way you want?

Well Its all an experiment of 'maybe' everything here
and the reviews said this is ok after or(before) Overdrive
and balance with the volume knob .... will see !

if I dont like it ..I ll flip it with something else !

no. what I have always done is get that awesome rhythm sound I want, then set the pedal so that when you want to solo you turn the pedal on and it is just a bit louder, thinner, edgy, whatever. if you're not going for a real distorted lead sound, it gives you a little extra "oomph" without drastically changing your sound.

Suppose you could get the same thing by doing it old school: turn your pickup volume down, get the rhythm sound you want by using the amp and guitar knobs, then turn the guitar volume knob up when you want to solo. you can see Jimmy Page do it a lot in the Song Remains The Same.

Well this week I did a nice trick and I think you all gave me
the idea which I opened the boost knob on my Marshall and put
the gain to 3 , All I can say is I have a pure sound of John
Fogerty tone on my lead and this is exactly what I want .

Yes I do it the old way Rhythm knob down with tone knob almost
mid and the Lead knob almost 8 now with the boost the band said
I m little louder so I turn the gain low to 3 and all sounds
balanced .

and it gives me some space for controlling my dynamic as well

Thanks Folks !
(I still would try the Micro Amp box ..i check the price its about
80$ used not bad )
