Re:An Opinion on Music Piracy

This is an excellent, well written open letter. I pay for all of my music (mostly through eclassical downloads, so I'm not sure what artist payments are) and my kids have bought from itunes since I caught Steven on limewire, deleted it from his computer, and gave him an itunes download limit when he was in jr high. (now a college student, he pays for his own, mostly, and also likes to get CDs for liner notes & physical presence.) A huge part of the problem is attitude. (And the attitude "I will make and give away my music for free, so you should, too." is not part of the solution.)

Excellent article, and thanks for bringing it to the forum.

Bronco: well written! You forgot about the 90's when that a-hole garth brooks tried to shutdown the selling of used cds. That's right banning you that right to resell your own property. I despise him.

The music business is very much like microsoft in that they believe every use is a lost sale and want to wave that banner. These sales are not. There is a used computer business that thrives in every town, craigslist, etc. Microsoft wants that shutdown. Expects each buyer to rebuy a new license for the used computer they bought. To paraphrase The Oracle 'what do companies with money want? More money.' Neither the music business nor microsoft are going out of business over sales they would not get anyway. Yet they want to act like the guy on the corner with the cardboard sign claiming to be homeless -who gets into his Lexus in the walmart parking lot when he's done. (not everyone with a sign is lying but many are). he music business wants to turn it and say how its hurting the artist -uh, then pAY THEM MORE instead of the gold shark tank in the lobby, the 400000 'vice presidents' and so on but they do pretty well for themselves. Stuffing themselves with steak while saying how "'those people' out there (us) need to stop stealing from 'their artists' and waiter, send a hamburger to the dishwasher he needs to eat something if he's going to record us an album tomorrow. Oh, this forks dirty, tell him to clean it better."

There is loss in any business and every business model should expect that and account for it. But they think they should have 200% sales and demand more $$. I hear Kevin Heart talking about the huge bodybuilder at the gym "You won! Go home!"

my greatest inspiration is my own damnation, pain is eternal
