Re:Warm isn't it?
Sunday, July 15 2012 @ 09:06 PM CDT
Good everybody else has commented so no one will pay any attention to what I say. Which is not to say any different from usual. But that's okay, it means no one will be pissed off at me.
As someone said previously, I am not a scientist doing global weather research. But I am old and have read many a book and magazine article in my time here. And I worked at a large research university and talked to quite a few of those scientists from time to time as part of my job. Believe me when I say that I was appalled at how much office, state and federal politics come to play in the hallowed halls of education. So the fact that quite a few disagree with each other doesn't shock me. My own opinion is that - yes, we do appear to be in a warming cycle. Is it man made? I have my doubts. A little common sense tells you that long before we were even on the earth and well before the industrial age, the earth went through many extreme temperature changes. Ice ages did exist. Very warm periods did exist. The level of the oceans rose and fell. Go out west in the deserts and mountains. You will find geologic evidence of seas that once were there. It also is a known fact that the sun has a sunspot cycle which corresponds with solar flares. The energy and heat output of the sun varies. Where does all of our heat actually come from, you bet. So Mother Nature has been playing these games for a long time. Should we stop putting emissions in the air? You bet if for no other reason than to help me cope with my allergies. Do big companies put short term profit before environmental concerns? Of course. How do we change this? Hell if I know. I'll be dead in a few years anyway. It is up to the young people. Good luck to them. If you really want to worry about something, read up on EMP's. That should scare the bejeezus out of you. And we could do something about that at a much smaller cost. What is worse than global warming. Try no electricity. No hydraulic pumps and the water stops after a while. You die in three or four days without water. What if your toilet won't flush? What if your car doesn't start? Especially your electric car which would be the most vulnerable. Everything stops, chaos ensues. Yeah, it could be worse. |

thanks for saving me a bunch of typing! that's where i'm at also folks should look into chaotic functions. it all depends on the time window you choose. there is no such thing as cycles or trends. life on this planet is a chaotic function. seriously, go look it up. and http://macjams.com/song/38368 |

It's not like I'm looking for more things to worry about, but what is an EMT? My music is much better than it sounds. |

Please don't affronted by this - I have great respect for what you have written here. But I do have to say that we are never too old to be active in our society - be it politically or practically. The kids I have been working with get very inspired by older folk validating their concerns about their future. They also seek the kind of advice and perspective that only we can offer. It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done. |

I'm sorry, climate science is extremely tricky. Common sense does not apply.
Yes, and? In these extreme periods our current society would not possibly exist. Also, we are currently outputting greenhouse gasses on a level that is close to what nature did in those extreme periods. Conclusion: 1. we are becoming a climatic force, 2. we are forcing the earth into one of these extremes, 3. if we keep this up, our society as we know it will not be able to exist.
A very minor influence on climate. Not nearly as big an influence as our output. Victor. -- My CD. Use coupon code "macjams" on BandCamp. |
