The US has become a sensationalistic news driven culture. A big story hits the news and people are ready to reshape our country and disregard the constitution instantly. Sad.

The US has some serious societal issues with inner city gangs, literacy and drugs. Perhaps we should heal our society before we start voiding our gun rights? Banning guns is putting a band-aid on a festering wound.

In all the zeal about the movie theatre shooting, people fail to mention that gun violence is on the decline in the US, I for one am in favor of controlling guns. They should be locked in a safe by law IMO. There are many quick access safes out there should you need to access your gun. This would cut down on accidents as well as thieves getting guns.

Hang around Texas during the presidential election... The NRA and gun enthusiast are always throwing around the gun control issue so people automatically assume that one party is for gun control the other isn't and that the government is going to try and take away your guns. Sales have sky rocketed and the gun shows here usually have a booth where you can gather all the propaganda needed to fuel the rage. Gun control hasn't seemed to be a major topic during the debates nation wide. This scare tactic is rather a way to sway the vote in the state of Texas and avoid more important issues.

Control freaks.

Like the mass-murdering and criminally insane type. These types, on a mission to murder will find a way.

not so sure about that logic.

homicide rates per capita:

USA: 4.8
Canada: 1.62
England: 1.23J
Japan: 0.36

obviously limited access to weapons has some affect.

Sources:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

Geneva Graduate Institute of International Studies. "Small Arms Survey 2007" Cambridge.

Among 23 high-income countries in the world scholars have studied, the United States is home to 80 percent of all gun deaths, and 87 percent of all gun deaths of children younger than 15:
http://njtoday.net/2012/03/28/childrens-defense-fund-report-on-kids-gun-deaths-new-gun-laws/

The total number of preschool-age children killed by guns during 2008/2009 in the US– 173 —was nearly double the number of law-enforcement officers – 89 — killed in the line of duty.
http://njtoday.net/2012/03/28/childrens-defense-fund-report-on-kids-gun-deaths-new-gun-laws/

data from 2009 which is way higher than that wiki link you posted:
http://ije.oxfordjournals.org/content/27/2/214.full.pdf

sorry man, but your numbers are way off (and outdated to boot). look at the last link. it tracks very extensively all of this data since 1993. the evidence is overwhelming and very well documented (from a variety of sources). This particular link is from the International Journal of Epidemiology (which I personally give more credence to than Wikipedia).

FWIW: I'm not going to get into an argument here. I have my opinions and you have yours. i believe that we need some sort of gun control that is instituted at a federal level so that the laws are the same in all states. no more of this "I drove one state over and bought it on craigslist." I'm not saying take everyones guns away, I'm saying the laws have to be consistent, sane and not based on reactionary politics.

I personally don't have a need for guns and I live in a bad neighborhood with lots of gang violence. if you feel like you need one, that's your call. but the current laws don't protect anyone but the gun owner. i really don't expect to win you over to my side and that's fine.

I don't want to argue at all.

You cherry-picked 4 points of data about homicides to demonstrate your point ("obviously limited access to weapons has some affect"), and I found some data to try to demonstrate that not all countries with lots of guns have a proportionately high homicide rate. The data that I found for total homicides by firearms per country was very close to your four examples in those four cases.

Edit 1: Total deaths by firearms, including by suicide and accident changes the graph, no doubt. It even more dramatically raises the death rate in countries with fewer guns.

It must be a mistake; the last link you referenced opens a document "accepted" in 1997 and published in 1998. That's pretty out of date, eh?

The numbers are not mine; if you look at the wiki page references and follow the links, the data is from various sources and years - as recent as 2012. If you want to dispute the data, that's your choice.

Edit 2: BTW - I don't own or have a gun. I may, some day, if I want to.

Oh crap; egg on my face. Meant to put the link for the new report. At work on a iPhone; sorry.
