Do we need it?

No really, we are off topic enough already for a music forum, and you find it necessary to start this discussion?

I just bought a large gun case.

It should fit at least half a dozen of my larger flutes, and with a little luck the gemshorn and krumhorn.

All I can say is that when I had a drug crazed thug trying to kick in my door and have his way in my home I was glad I had one.

When I looked in my wife's eyes and saw the fear because someone was trying to bust their way in, I was glad to be able to defend. When you come face to face with this reality all of the politics and posturing goes right out the window. I am a pacifist until you try that. The real world has a way of opening one's eyes. At that moment I could give a shit less if you are against it or not.

There is another alternative. Go out the back door while dialing 911 and let the police handle the perp and your insurance cover the loss.
Did you shoot the intruder? Did he have a weapon? Did you unnecessarily endanger yourself or another by brandishing a weapon in order to protect property?

The same laws that put a gun in your hand - put a gun in his hand.

True. Drugs are outlawed but they can be obtained fairly easily also. However they cost a lot more as a result and a user in the throes of addiction may resort to breaking and entering with a gun in order to score cash and prizes to support his habit.

Does that wash any better. Maybe I should keep a stash of drugs at my house to defend myself with. But if my kids get a hold of it there could be dire consequences. Same goes with a gun.

I will not go quoting some wiki link - but I recall hearing that more shootings in the home are committed by family members and child accidents than criminals. I could well be wrong about this.

The second amendment was initially intended to provide the populace with the fire power to defend itself against tyranny. Members of state militias were also permitted to own weapons. It was a later stretch of it's intent that put guns into the hands of all Americans.
