Trak Master Pro
Monday, July 23 2012 @ 01:09 PM CDT

I remembered over the weekend a unit I had bought a few years ago Focusrite

Trackmaster Pro

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Focusrite-TrakMaster-Pro-Channel-Strip-103145827-i1125408.gc

It had been sitting in cupboard along with a load of other stuff - a couple of Oktava 314 mics, korg electribe rhythm box (v1), novation bass station and a few other things (my old midi gear - emu samplers, yamaha TG33 and so on) - quite the obsolete treasure trove. All this stuff has been basically packed away and forgotten about since I moved in 2008/2009

In regards to the trakmaster, does anyone else use one of these? Are they any good? Is there any other more up to date unit worth considering?

I would be sending the mono output from this to the input of my soundcard...the idea being to use the pre amps and maybe the compressor on vocals

An OK unit - even now it'd be at least 5-700 clams for anything better. Suffers from trying to stuff too much in the box.

Drawmer make a couple of nice units similar to this. Focusrite too. Their good ones ain't cheap, but that said, I laid out 2 grand on a Drawmer 1960 15 years ago, just got a set of replacement tubes ($200). It's seen continuous use all that time, 2 ch mic/instrument pre and compressor, not the very best in the world but damn good (they're still making them, which has to tell you something). 33c a day so far, and still going strong.

So, it's up to you. If you haven't thought to dig it out for 3 years, do you need it or a replacement at all?

Try it out again, but there's probably reasons you left it in the closet. Then ask yourself if you need a better one.

24. The first testicular guard, the "Cup," was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1924. That means it only took 50 years for men to realize that their brain is also important.

thanks moon wolf
i kind of agree...i did try a vocal track on it last night and did a direct A-B comparison with the same vocal track i recorded a couple of weeks ago...the track master version definitely has got a bit more presence/punch

i will continue to experiment

thanks for the note
