As for the inability to run on many macs, its because MT Lion is only 64 bit and some of the older macs have 32 bit among their code. That's why the 2007 Pro won't do it. Not unless Apple were to rewrite the code for those models and it seems unlikely). Sucks but true. You can read more by doing a search if you want.

not totally impossible i imagine

Re:Mountain Lion?

I have been using Lion on a Mac Mini because that's what it had when I bought it. But I only used it to watch movies and listen to music hooked up to my 47" flat screen tv. Then an electric storm decided to retire my iMac which had been running Snow Leopard and now it is my everyday computer.

I immediately noticed that when I started installing old software and games from my backup external hard drive, a great deal of it didn't work. I eventually learned that this was because the Rosetta application which allowed pre-Intel Mac software to work was now not supported or included with Lion.

Apple's excuse for this was that it was only meant to be temporary software to help the USER transition from non intel Macs. That's fine and dandy but the only problem is that it is not the user that didn't transition it is the third party software makers.

Most of the applications and games that I had used and loved over the years had never had Intel Mac versions put out by the third party companies. So you couldn't upgrade or buy new versions even if you wanted to. The Mac market apparently just wasn't large enough for them to justify the expense.

So I have had to find Lion capable software to take their place and in a lot of instances couldn't find the equivalent or am a lot less happy with the replacement. Of course Apple could care less. They only want you to run their software or stuff they sell through the Mac App Store.

As to whether to upgrade to Mountain Lion, the only thing I see that's new that I might use is the Dictation but I am not sure how useful that would be until I actually try it out. When it's been said that Safari is a lot faster with ML does that mean webpages come up faster, download speeds are a lot faster or what?

Color me not real excited at this point.

Dictation and speech work pretty good I'm using it right now and it's working better than I can type. The air play works pretty good and it seems that the operating system runs much faster. So far I think the $20 is worth it.

Is Lion all ironed out yet?

How much did everyone spend by the time they upgraded any software that wouldn't work anymore after they upgraded the OS?

The only reason I had upgraded to Lion was because Apple did away with MobileMe/iDisk. I wanted to have things sync'ed between my Mac Pro at home, Mac Pro at work, Macbook pro, iPhone and iPad. Apparently I'm not throwing enough money at Apple. Or maybe I'm throwing too much their way and that's why they are making a 5 yr. old (expensive) machine obsolete.

And I am not impressed with Lion. It's really slow (compared to Snow Leopard) on my mid-2010 MacPro at work with Quad 2.8GHz Intel Xeon processors and 6Gb of ram.

This reminds me of when Lion came out, I couldn't upgrade my macbook anymore so I reinstalled the OS it had on it and now my daughter has it. I'm sure sooner or later my machines will be obsolete again. Sorry for your turmoil, I've felt the pain.

I noticed a lot of people were bummed about the new Air Play feature only working on 2011 or newer machines. That would be the main reason I would download it.

I found a little app called airparrot - doe the same job and very cheap.

Must try harder

Maybe it is time I take that big step and upgrade.

I think I still have one in the closet that has a windows/mac processor in it. I haven't tried to install windows 8 on it yet.

John, if those are yours and they are working I'd keep 'em that way for another 5 to 10 years then they will be worth some real money.

It just kills me to think I had an Apple I... working... Played with it. Put it in a box then threw it out and one recently sold at an auction for $375,000. That would have put a REAL DENT in my mortgage!!!

I also had a II and a II+. Both worked. I even had the 8" drives for the II+. It kills me to think what this ancient hardware is worth had I kept it all.

sigh...

For my wife:
She seems so real

I feel for you Mark. You know if we had dumped money into Apple Stock back in 1997 we would all be sitting pretty.
