Re:Mountain Lion?

I have been using Lion on a Mac Mini because that's what it had when I bought it. But I only used it to watch movies and listen to music hooked up to my 47" flat screen tv. Then an electric storm decided to retire my iMac which had been running Snow Leopard and now it is my everyday computer.
I immediately noticed that when I started installing old software and games from my backup external hard drive, a great deal of it didn't work. I eventually learned that this was because the Rosetta application which allowed pre-Intel Mac software to work was now not supported or included with Lion. Apple's excuse for this was that it was only meant to be temporary software to help the USER transition from non intel Macs. That's fine and dandy but the only problem is that it is not the user that didn't transition it is the third party software makers. Most of the applications and games that I had used and loved over the years had never had Intel Mac versions put out by the third party companies. So you couldn't upgrade or buy new versions even if you wanted to. The Mac market apparently just wasn't large enough for them to justify the expense. So I have had to find Lion capable software to take their place and in a lot of instances couldn't find the equivalent or am a lot less happy with the replacement. Of course Apple could care less. They only want you to run their software or stuff they sell through the Mac App Store. As to whether to upgrade to Mountain Lion, the only thing I see that's new that I might use is the Dictation but I am not sure how useful that would be until I actually try it out. When it's been said that Safari is a lot faster with ML does that mean webpages come up faster, download speeds are a lot faster or what? Color me not real excited at this point. |

Dictation and speech work pretty good I'm using it right now and it's working better than I can type. The air play works pretty good and it seems that the operating system runs much faster. So far I think the $20 is worth it.

This reminds me of when Lion came out, I couldn't upgrade my macbook anymore so I reinstalled the OS it had on it and now my daughter has it. I'm sure sooner or later my machines will be obsolete again. Sorry for your turmoil, I've felt the pain. Music is my toy |

I think I still have one in the closet that has a windows/mac processor in it. I haven't tried to install windows 8 on it yet. Music is my toy |

John, if those are yours and they are working I'd keep 'em that way for another 5 to 10 years then they will be worth some real money. It just kills me to think I had an Apple I... working... Played with it. Put it in a box then threw it out and one recently sold at an auction for $375,000. That would have put a REAL DENT in my mortgage!!! I also had a II and a II+. Both worked. I even had the 8" drives for the II+. It kills me to think what this ancient hardware is worth had I kept it all. sigh... |

I feel for you Mark. You know if we had dumped money into Apple Stock back in 1997 we would all be sitting pretty. Music is my toy |
