Another cool EQ trick is to bump the frequency an octave above the fundamental note. For example, if an A is played with a frequency of 440Hz, you can "brighten" the tone by raising the EQ at 880HZ, an octave above the fundamental tone. This basically reinforces the naturally occurring 2nd harmonic. The science of sound...cool stuff!
