The words 'and' and 'but' don't need a comma before. Lol

More significantly; family, friends and mentors. How one deals with that is in the forge of wisdom. It's a lesson that I look up from and say, 'Ok! I get it. So I have to go learn it again'?! And then I see how others handle greater loss and it helps somehow.

But a comma between and and of would make it right
24. The first testicular guard, the "Cup," was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1924. That means it only took 50 years for men to realize that their brain is also important. |

I think in Bill's case above, a comma before and is appropriate as a dramatic pause. Not necessary, but not incorrect.
On the subject of death - a few years back Roz Chast ran a great cartoon in the New Yorker of someone reading the obituaries. The columns on the paper read: Older Than You - Younger Than You - Exactly Your Age. It comes in waves I find - and hits hardest when it's friends and loved ones. What I found difficult was when I realized that the I was about the same age as the older rock stars I looked up to in my youth. Back when I was 16, 10 years was a huge gap. Now we're all pretty much the same age. It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done. |

Seems like I remember when the comma was used before "and." Then it became optional. In this case it might be better set after "and" to separate "of course."
For me, it has been death of family and friends that strike me. I'm making new friends, too! The young grow up to fill in some of those spaces. New and good memories swell with old and become more than I would have thought possible. |

As a teacher, I will say that Smokey's comma usage was correct; however, instead of a dash after life, he should have used a colon. Additionally, he should have capitalized the beginning of the sentence, as well as "I".
Just sayin'. Thread Killer |

One day at a time. Sorry to hear of your loss. It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done. |
