Re:On Piracy

This is a bit like equating rape with consensual sex. There's a substantial difference between taking what is freely gifted to you... and just taking whatever you want that belongs to someone else.

Agreed. Piracy will always exist and has since the first tape recorder was built. In fact I bet you used to be able to get bootleg copies of sheet music way back when. Models of business are always changing to keep up with the times and that's a good thing. Some changes in business result in changes in product - and that can go either way - as it always has. Basically - talent, creativity, moxie and finally - hard work will reward many. Just as it always has. The lucky may still get lucky, the deserving may still be forgotten, the gifted might be discovered and the no-talents might just have a harder time getting anywhere. It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done. |

Chief, they were called fake books by the publishers. They were in reality the truth or as close as we could get to the truth at the time and without paying for it...

I meant it to show where music is going, not where it is now. In the near future what we call piracy will be just file sharing because the internet will change the music biz. I never pirate music myself, cos I think the artist should benefit. But soon I don't think there will be much opportunity to benefit, just create music for the sake of it. That will remove the drive to be commercial (i.e. lame) and hopefully produce more interesting stuff. |

Exploring the validity of the... "Everybody Wants To Be In Show Business" premise? Is the concept exploitation or just good fun? Perhaps a savvy combination of both. If the musicians want to volunteer their talents, that's certainly their choice. It's sort of Free Enterprise within... Free Enterprise.
