The World Sucks
Tuesday, September 11 2012 @ 08:58 PM CDT
well, no, the world DOESN'T suck.
i think the real problem is that i'm getting old and getting tired of it all. it's perception. the world has always had lots of problems, but when i was younger i was either unengaged in some issues so they meant little to me, or they seemed important and i was generally hopeful about those. it's still the same today. different details... but... what is truly different is my perspective. |

Whenever I feel like this, I just remember that in roughly five billion years, as the Sun runs out of fuel it will begin to expand, encompassing the inner planets including Earth, leaving our world a burned out cinder orbiting a dying star.
So, basically, nothing that happens makes any real difference in the universe. That always perks me right up... |

@ Smokey:
Which is exactly as it should be; it'd be a pretty damning indictment if your perceptions didn't change with experience! In general, I read lucid expressions of dissatisfaction as expressions of essential vigor and optimism: the world sucks, but it doesn't HAVE to. Joseph is a VERY funny fellow who has mastered the art of internet communication! |

Good post Smokey, but I think your first impression is closer to the truth. The world, i.e. life, does suck. Not that there isn't any good, anything worth cherishing or esteeming in life... no, but it is those very moments of good that we experience which tell us, in unguarded moments, that something is terribly amiss. Maybe it takes getting older to realize that. Mankind's enigma: Intrinsically we know how good the world (and ourselves) could and should be. Yet we and the world have fallen so short of that good and continue to do so. So yeah life, on this globe as it is, sucks. Recognizing that is such not a bad place to start from. cheers! ![]() |

I'm 21 and I also think it sucks... don't know if you're talking about the people in it or about the world itself, but I've lived my later years thinking that we're only here finishing what could be good about nature and life. I appreciate a lot the chance to live, make music or kiss my girlfriend, but there are some big details that make me wonder about people (if thats what you're talking about) and if we deserve to be here. As jgurner said, we are nothing compared to the universe, but yet some little actions may hurt like hell.

Okay, if the world doesn't suck and is instead full of overwhelmingly warm and vibrant experiences and relationships, what does that mean? I am a contrarian?
Brace up my friend! Truly, it IS as you choose to see it ![]() Daug |

There are no "free lunches." It's not a matter of if we will get mentally, emotionally or physically smacked around, it's how well recover and adjust.

It does suck on many levels but it also glows and vibrates with life.
