Ok... well this sort of is even before the 90's but I used to send email using addresses like:

mail tom!ucsd.edu!ucla.harbor.edu!ucsc!ibmcon.avv!backbone24

these were known as "bang" paths and when it work you had to try replacing say ibmcon.avv with some other mid point machine.

IE you did the routing of the email.
