Alcohol + Mixing = ?
Thursday, September 20 2012 @ 11:34 AM CDT

Had a few drinks last night, did an epic mix. I'm thinking to how sounds are less distinguishable whilst under the influence of alcohol. Perhaps this side-effect of drinking spurred on extra detail that one would not normally pay attention to under normal circumstances?

Anyone else had this? Thoughts?

Maybe being in the audio career isn't such a bad job after all!

As many working bands have proclaimed to their audiences...

"The more you drink, the better we sound." Wink

I'd agree with that, but until now I've never agreed with a slight variation, being "the more you drink, the better we sound the day after".

Accidents DO happen, but I wouldn't make a steady diet of the experience. Wink

Alcohol, to a certain tipping-point, loosens your inhibitions and can make you play better by allowing you to express yourself easier, but I don't know how that translates to mixing or mastering. Marijuana, on the other hand definitely alters how your brain processes sounds while in an altered state, all those Phish fans can't be wrong, but you definitely suffer in the manual dexterity department.

I admit to having tried both and enjoying the effects on my playing, but I would at least recommend moderation, if at all. I don't really feel the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Best mix I ever did drunk was a song about drinking ..... Wasn't that good.

I have finally figured this out but now I have forgotten what to use it for.

I'd have to say alcohol is better for mingling than mixing.

It's better to regret something you have done, than something you haven't done.

Well you all seem to agree on this one.

Probably was an accident! But I'm still interested to look into the chemical effects on the brain, in particular the actual changes to the perception of sound...

a little booze might help remove inhibitions both in performance and mixing/arranging - but there's a fine line: just a little more, and good judgement goes out the window!

for some people, this could be the beginning of an excuse to drink too much, too often. i've feared that i have crossed that line at times. alcohol is a seductive drug. be careful.
