Nubie Question?
Tuesday, August 17 2004 @ 09:30 PM CDT

It is great to find a community that not only are musicians but mac users. I eagerly await to work with my peers here on my ever consuming project and theirs. Yet I have a question? What protection is there say if I post part of a song to get advice/opinions on and someone desides to take it. Please excuse the mild (or not so mild) paranoia, but many years have went into this work and would hate to have it get famous without my name on it. They have sort of become my children and nothing else an extention of myself. Is there steps that I can take to avoid this senario?

Thanks in advance.

there is none.

but i've had my stuff on the net since 1995 and i've never had a problem with someone taking it.
although there might be a band in upper mongolia that is rocking my stuff. who knows.

if you want just make friends with someone on here and send it privately.

but you could meet someone in real life and they could steal your stuff.
i've never heard ofa problem on macjams.

everyone here is helpful and upfront.

worse thing that happens is someone votes in the 1's for no reason.

dont be paranoid you just invite trouble.
be brave.

Welcom to the community bbt!

We all risk having work taken if it gets posted. There is creative commons licensing that goes on when you post your songs. The community here is very helpful, honest (sometimes brutally) and considerate towards the fellow members of the community. This is quite a unique place. The cubase message board is nothing like this!

And hell, if someone steals your work and makes millions, just think of the millions you'll make when you sue them =)

You can always do the Post Office Route
Burn a CD - mail it to yourself - Never open it!
UNTIL you might need it in a Court of Law.

It would be nice if we had a DO NOT ALLOW DOWNLOAD Feature
But this is the Internet . . . People will figure out how to do it anyways.

Unless You are already famous, why worry, downloads might help get you to become more known.

It's a Risk we all take. Give your DEMO to an Agent, and what if he plays it around, and somebody steals It/Your Ideas and changes things from your original . . . How You gonna Prove It ?

Here . . . we get Feedback, Learn things, Commune, and Enjoy!

-Cheers!

Then maybe, You've got Fans here, as your Musical Witnesses!

In General, Music should be "Always Different", Like People.

We, of course, are assuming that somebody WANTS to steal your stuff.

I've never had that problem.

Welcome friend. I've had this paranoia too. But then, I realized how much better my work was getting because of the input from people on this site-- and the influences I've gained here. So, it's a trade. You take a little risk and get back a big huge leap in quality, knowledge, skill and feedback that would be impossible otherwise.

You can minimize the risk by using judem's clever idea above (classic), or check out this thread about cheaply copyrighting your own work. I wholeheartedly agree with what's been said-- be bold. It's worth it.

I'm with Fosod. I'd be flattering myself if I thought someone could make money off of my stuff.

Not to align my sporadic one-off's with your life's labour of song. When I post something I think is really unique, yeah I feel a little nervous about all that, but until it happens to someone here, I'm sure we'll just keep on postin'. Mind you, that new Hoobastank song sounds a little like my Milk song...

Oh and that's weird. Immediately after typing that last sentence I see that the Milk song is in the mystery picks column...

This is the digital age, no matter what media your music is on it can be had by those who want it. Or you can do what I do just post stuff that nobody in their right mind would want to listen too let alone claim as their own.

If you are using GarageBand loops, it is also entirely possible (very likely actually) that someone somewhere has also used the same loop before you, but surprisingly those who use loops( like me) very rarely ( in fact I have never heard it yet) hear them in the same configuration as someone else, so on that score I would just post up your tracks and forget about people stealing stuff.
If you want feedback on your work and are agreeable about others commenting in the ways that they see fit, then this is a good place to be.

Thanks for all the feedback, and the ego check. Smile
I look foward to the feedback on my stuff and maybe a few colabs.
